This has been badly mangled by the Optical Character Reading process. If you
found it in Welsh Newspapers Online, please give us the name of the
newspaper and the date, so that we can see the original.
One of the problems with Welsh Newspapers Online is that if you simply
accept their OCR-generated text you can get some garbling effect. Using
'Print Screen' when you have the original in the viewing window may mean
that you can grab a decent image and crop it to get a readable version of
the original.
The piece is about publication by the Clarendon Press in Oxford of a version
of the New Testament. It seems to be Wycliffe's translation (ca 1385 ) and
has been revised by someone called Parsey. A bit of Googling on Wycliffe New
Testament refers to a revision by someone called John Purvey about 1400. The
reference to 500 years seems to place this excerpt somewhere around 1885.
If you look at
http://lollardsociety.org/pdfs/Wyclif_NewTest.pdf you will
see a digitised version of a Clarendon Press edition of MDCCCLXXIX (1879).
This refers to Wycliffe's translation as 1380 and John Purvey's revision as
1388.
I suspect that if you look at the original you may find that what has been
produced as Parsey by the OCR may originally have been Purvey, or else the
original writer in the Welsh-language publication, or the typesetter, got it
wrong.
Someone else may make sense of the bit about the people of America.
As an aside, the translation of the Bible was a topic of live discussion in
newspapers around 1880. The publication of the 'Revised Version' of the New
Testament in 1881 produced a number of items in the 'Cambrian', including
public lectures about it by the local Catholic priest, and a detailed
excerpt of a presentation about it by a Unitarian scholar.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Version tells you about the Revised
Version. I have a scanned copy of the Catholic priest's lecture on it, if
anyone has that particular interest.
