Hi Daniel
Gomer books do a good range of books for children - see :
http://www.gomer.co.uk/index.php/books-for-children/non-fiction-for-child...
I don't know of any books for children which realistically portray
life in an early 20th century mining village. However the early
chapters of Sian Phillips' autobiography 'Private Faces' are set in
Gwaun-cae-gurwen, and very well written. Later chapters might not be
so suitable for an 11-year old though!
If your son enjoyed the books of Roald Dahl he might like to read
Boy!, his story of his early life in Cardiff. It's available online
at
http://142.23.40.13/big/english/stories/RoaldDahl_Boy.pdf
It's a world away from the Valleys of course but it is roughly
contemporary with your father, and great fun.
I hope you and your family enjoy your visit.
Best wishes
Anna

I live in the USA. Next summer, I will be taking my wife and our son
(age 11) to visit Wales for the first time. In preparation, our son
would like to read some books or watch some films (either fiction or
nonfiction) that are about Wales or set in Wales. Any suggestions?
