Hi Cecil
Thanks ever so for that. I went to the NYS site and found out how to apply for copy certs
and how much it might cost me. Obviously the more info I give them, the more likely they
are to find it. So, I will follow the second part of your advice and sign up to the NYS
mailing list to try to clarify just what info I need eg, which County.
Thanks again, David W

How on earth do I obtain certificates of births, marriages and deaths in the US,

In the US, BMD certificates are handled by individual states, in different ways and for
different time periods. For example, Pennsylvania Death Registrations in the period
1893-1905 are in individual counties, if they survived. There was none prior to 1893, and
in 1906 the State took over the task and there is now a central site that handles them.
Some states have BMD information online, but not many.
My suggestions would be to 1) Go to the website of the state of interest and poke around
at the various links there; and 2) Subscribe to a Rootsweb Mailing List in the state and
post your question.

Cecil
