In conjunction with Jeff's input, may I add that the walby in Pont Walby is
a personal name. It is listed as Walby Bridge in 1825 (Cambrian Index).
Local tradition has it that it was named after a man named Walby who drowned
in the river just before the bridge was built. But it may well be named, as
Jeff stated, after the man who built the bridge.
There is a Llanwalby listed in Port Talbot on the Melville Richards Archive
(on-line), but I can add nothing else to that info.
Regards,
Deric.

Somehow I thought Pont Walby was because a chap called Walby built a
bridge
(pont) which of course would have been on the road from Neath to Hirwaun
and
Merthyr. It was a turnpike road, judging by descriptions of enumeration
districts in 1851 census. Pontwalby was in Rhigos hamlet of Ystradyfodwg
parish, believe it or not.
If you give us details of where the marriage was, and bride's residence,
we
may get an idea. It could simply be a farm or cottage name if the marriage
was fairly local. With names and year we might even find them in a census.
