Hi Eliz
All the Registration Districts were created in 1837 which is when civil
registration started.
Prior to that everything was based on parishes.
Have a read here and then Parish registers from the menu
http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks3.html#Parishes
Data on Merthyr Tydfil church records is here
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/MerthyrTydfil/#ChurchRecords
Genuki has Pontypridd under Llantwit Fardre parish - it does span more than
one

My 2 x ggf was born in Methyr Tydfil [per the 1851 census his wife
gave
Merthyr] in 1830 the bit at Genuki says MT wasn't created until 1837,
where
would the records be before that date? I am still struggling to figure
out
the Welsh system, searching Pontypridd and getting so many different
names
come up has told me I really don't get it <G>
