image), the
enumerator's writing is very bad and his spelling is irregular. The
transcription of the names *may* be accurate but some guesswork was
involved.
Regarding Thos John: it looks like Ths John to me.
Regarding Marvan: the transcriber may have been influenced by thinking
of Marvin which is/was a fairly common name in the United States (it's
supposedly from Welsh morfa and a variant of Mervyn etc). However, in
the original there seems to be a letter t at the end (Marvant?) and I'm
not at all sure that it's really a v in the middle.
That doesn't answer the question of what happened to them, sorry!
Best wishes,

What happened to these people?
I believe this to be my great grandfather's brother and his family,
living next door to great grandfather (David Rowlands) in Porth
(Llanwonno) in the 1881 census (LDS transcription) :
John ROWLANDS, Head, M, Male, 31, Sirhowy, Fireman
Mary ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Wife, M, Female, 30, Aberdare,
Glamorgan, Wales
Daniel ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Son, U, Male, 10, Treorky, Glamorgan,
Wales
Margret ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Daur, U, Female, 9, Treorky,
Glamorgan, Wales
Thos.John ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Son, U, Male, 7, Treorky,
Glamorgan, Wales
Marvan ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Son, U, Male, 5, Treorky, Glamorgan,
Wales
Wm.Henry ROWLAND (ROWLANDS), Son, U, Male, 2, Havod, Glamorgan,
Wales
But I have not been able to find this mob in either the 1891 or 1901
census nor, with any certainty, any individual among them in any
other subsequent record. Given that it is the LDS transcription and
how bad that is in other instances where I have other data (such as
my great grandfather's family, 'drws nesaf'), this record must be
taken as at least approximate. (Who's ever heard of 'Marvan' as a
first name?--should it be Morgan'? 'Marian' even?).
If anyone can find evidence of them elsewhere I'd be very grateful.
I should say that I have looked at on-line US immigration records to
no clear benefit.
