They aren't losing family trees just remodeling if you will. All of them are
to be taken with a shaker of salt. Mine is full of (If I have the right one)
notes I have lots of parish records and death certificates etc but it is
still shaky sometimes, lots of times. Especially early on when they can't be
checked in the census.
On line trees might, I do mean might, provide hints and warnings.

I want to say that I have nothing against
Ancestry.com. I use it
basically
for looking up people in the censuses and it is a joy to find them rather
than doing my old method of "reading line by line" which I've done a lot
of in
the 20+ years of research.
However, I really don't think the loss of the family trees on
Ancestry.com
is a loss. There are so many mistakes in those trees that it ceases to
be
funny. Some researchers don't know how to put the information together--
why
would you put your ancestor's second wife first with all the children and
then
the first wife's children last? Why would you have your ancestor born
after
he died? Or why would you have your ancestor marry his own grandmother?
I
can tell you a horrid story from own family: a researcher took one of my
relatives who was buried in New York State in 1864 age 65 (his wife died
in
1867). We have proof that he was buried in NY - cemetery records and a
will.
This researcher changed the spelling of his name, married him to her
ancestor,
who was only 20 years of age, moved them to Southern Indiana and he lived
another 60 years and had 12 more children. It took me four years to find
her
and when I did and explained to her that she had the wrong ancestor, what
did
she say to me: "Well, I just figured he was mine because I couldn't find
anyone else!" I have a couple of male cousins who would like to "slug"
her for
all the trouble she's caused them. So, maybe
Ancestry.com is doing the
right
thing to get rid of these family trees.
