What Year or range of years are you looking for?
Some years in early 1840s had only very poor images available to FreeBMD for
transcription. There is of course the possibility of looking through the
scan images in the View Image route on FreeBMD or via the Free access BMD
pages on Ancestry at
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
You need to give your email address and select a password to use it, but you
don't need to pay anything, so if you hit one of their buttons asking for
money, go back and avoid it. Ancestry were only given permission to put the
BMD indexes on their website with the condition that no charge was made to
view them.
If you are looking for Amelia JONES b abt 1837 who was in Quakers Yard in
1901 then the same person seems to have been in Llanfabon in 1891 and 1881
wife of Thomas, a grocer born Carmarthenshire,Cilycwm, called Amy, though in
1881 she seems to have been born in 1834. As the son in 1881 was 17 b
Llanfabon and there was a granddaughter aged 3 it looks as if they were
married before 1871 and quite likely before 1861.
in 1871 she is Amy b Glam Llanfiangle which might be an attempt to render
Michaelston y fedw into Welsh, as that parish adjoins St Mellons (Welsh name
Llaneurwg). At the time he was a coal miner and eldest child, a daughter
Margaret, was 9.
In 1861 she is Amelia and born Glamorgan 'Eglwyelain' which may be a version
of Eglwysilan. At the time they had no children so were presumably newly
married.
In all these they are in Llanfabon, Garth hamlet, somewhere in or near
Nelson. Ages vary a little for both, with her always a bit older than him,
and year of birth about 1834 to 1838.
FreeBMD allows you to search on a marriage of a Thomas JONES with a person
on the same page with forename Am* which covers Amy or Amelia.
The most likely marriage seems to be in Merthyr Tydfil district (which
included Llanfabon) December 1860 quarter ref 11a 516 ( which fits with no
children in 1861 census but a 9-year-old ten years later) The matching
female is Amy STEPHENS.
In 1841 there is an Amelia STEPHENS age 5 daughter of John STEPHENS 35 Iron
miner, born Glamorgan and Mary also 35, who was not born in Glamorgan, in
Caedraw, Merthyr. Children David 10 Joseph 9 Amelia 5 Elizabeth 3 John 1 all
shown born in county.
I can't immediately locate this family in 1851.
It could be Amy/Amelia was already a widow in 1860.
Hope this helps.
Jeff

Subject: [GLA] Jones Family
I have resumed trying to find the marriage of my Grt Grandparents
Thomas
JONES and Amelia. I thought the update to BMD might have helped but I am
having real trouble . When I look up Thomas JONES in the time and area I
need there are quite a few in the Merthyr area that are deemed unreadable.
Is there anywhere I can get the information. As I do not know Amelia's
surname the registers in London are no good. From the census's it says she
was born in St Mellons I have been through the census and looked up all the
Amelia's to match with Thomas Jones No luck. I have one marriage between
an Amy and Thomas but as she calls herself Amelia in the census I don't
think she would be Amy on her marriage certificate. They where living in
Garth Hamlet around the time of marriage. I am having no luck finding her
surname from her children birth certificates Margaret and john are too
common names The record office search facility will only look up a couple
of names for each fee. Have anybo!
dy any ideas?
Linda
