Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the info, in particular the map link - I have done many
unsucessful searches trying to find the street names but I don't think they
are still in existence. I will take a look and see what I can dig up.
- As an addition, I know that Patrick lived on Lloyd Street in 1863 - does
anyone out there have any information about that?
- Also, I noticed from the census records for '71 and '81 that the majority
of Patrick's neighbors (from what I've researched so far) were Welsh born -
looks like he was in the minority as being Irish born in those particular
areas - I am wondering if anyone out there has any advanced knowledge of the
areas and of how his occupation might fit in with where he lived (in
particular, amongst the natives - as it was my understanding that many Irish
clustered together when they came over and this is in contradiction to
that).
- I have checked out the Alan George site - I think Penydarren Ironworks was
closed in 1859 - I'm guessing Patrick would have worked at Dowlais - I was
just curious if there was another maybe lesser known one that someone local
might be able to indicate.
- Forgive my ignorance, but what's the Glamorgan FHS? (Family History
Society? Just a guess).
- I am also trying to locate the full baptismal registers of my family - I
have all the dates - but I'd like to see the full registers if possible, to
see if godparents' names appear - a few people on the list suggested
contacting the Merthyr Tydfil library. I have attempted to do that by the
email address provided on their website, but the email was returned back to
me due to a bad address. Does anyone out there have any other suggestions
about (a) how to contact the library; and (b) any other resource to contact
to obtain copies of full registers?
I know this is a lot of info - figured I'd bang it all out at once - thanks
in advance to anyone on any info on any of the above points!
-Amanda

Do a Google or other search for GENUKI Merthyr Tydfil and you will see
lots of resources about Merthyr. Also I think there is a link there to the
Alan George site which shows old postcards and photos of Merthyr.
Penydarren Iron Works if it was still open in 1871, or maybe Dowlais Iron
Works. Plenty of quarries around. Someone more local may be able to suggest
nearest that was shown on old map from 1880s.
Multimap may help you find these streets if they are still there. You should
be able to get at an 1880s map of Merthyr area at
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/map.asp but it is best if you have an idea
from a modern map where to look.
Lots of researchers of Irish families in Merthyr area are or have been on
this list. Glamorgan FHS has transcriptions of Merthyr Catholic church
records.

Subject: [GLA] Question about Occupations
On the 1871 Wales census, Patrick Clifford is listed as a
"laborer in
the
iron works" and living at 89 Penydarren Road, Merthyr Tydfil. On the 1881
census, he is listed as a "quarryman" living at 41
Plantation Street,
Merthyr Tydfil.
With these occupations and addresses would it be clear where he worked and
what he might have done in the quarry/ironworks?
He was born in County Kerry, Ireland.
Thank you.
