Hi Jeff - lightening responses from you and Robert - huge thanks both of
you.
One of the families I’m interested in is the one you found like me in 1911
Thomas SEXTON – one of the daughters who wasn’t living at home in 1911 later
married in 1916 and gave this as her address – Sarah Ann SEXTON.
Up to 1922 a man called Ernest SESSIONS had 83 Saltmead Road as his last
known address and he died at sea – he and Sarah SEXTON had a son together in
1920 in Glasgow. On this birth cert she detailed that she and Ernest
SESSIONS were married on 1st May 1916. However, she in reality she appears
to have married an Ernest PRICE in 1916 (on 1st May). Can't make out if she
lied to protect her dignity on the birth certificate or whether she did in
fact later marry SESSIONS but I have never found a marriage cert.
Ernest PRICE and Ernest SESSIONS do check out as separate people with
different ages, recorded fathers’ names, and families in previous census
returns.
I’m trying to look at all the residence records for this address to see if I
can tie it all together!
I will sit down and look at all the other information you've sent me Jeff -
and thanks again for your work.
Ellen

Subject: Re: [GLA] 83 Saltmead Road, Cardiff
Saltmead Road is no longer known by that name. It appears in Grangetown in
the 1897 Cardiff Street Directory and from the description and number of
houses it appears to be called Stafford Road now.
In 1897 the occupant was Charles Hill.
In 1911 census it was occupied by the family of Thomas SEXTON, 54, his wife
Sarahann 50 and children Thomas 17, Charles H 13, Ann 11 and Nellie 5.
Thomas senior was a general labourer at Barry Dock, and Thomas junior a
Billiard Marker in a hotel. All were born in Cardiff. The return was
completed by Sarah ann Sexton. This couple had been married 30 years, had
had 13 children, of whom 7 were then living and 6 had died.
From Google Maps it appears to have been an ordinary three-bedroom
terraced
house with the front door opening onto the street, and a rather small rear
garden. In working-class areas of Cardiff the general pattern at the time
was that such houses were Leasehold, i.e. a yearly ground rent was payable
for 99 years to a ground landlord. Typically many of these houses were
bought as investments either individually or in blocks of 2, 4 or more, and
then rented out to tenants, some of whom would stay in the same house for
many years, but some of whom would move fairly frequently.
In 1937 Cardiff Directory it is shown as Stafford Road (formerly Saltmead
Road) and the occupant is shown as Mrs Sarah Ann Sexton.
I think you need to track back the Sexton family and identify the other
children, and the husbands of the girls ( from FreeBMD for example, clicking
on the page number when you find a marriage), and their children. At a quick
glance on FreeBMD it appears that Thomas died in 1917 age 60 and Sarah Ann
in 1946 age 75.
Sarah Ann's maiden name seems to have been Britton. I would not be surprised
to find that after her husband died other members of her family (such as
widowed sisters) might have come to live with her, or she might have sub-let
part of the house (say the front room and one or two bedrooms) to lodgers.
In 1901 census Thomas said he was born in Swansea, and Sarah Ann said that
she was born in Kinghurst,Bristol. They had married in 1882. In 1891 census
Thomas again said he was born in Swansea, and Sarah Ann in Bristol. There
were two older children in the household in 1891 who were not there in 1901.
In both of these censuses Thomas was a Dock Labourer. The eldest daughter,
Esther, may have married either in 1905 or 1908, but her birth may have been
registered as Britton, not Sexton.

Subject: [GLA] 83 Saltmead Road, Cardiff
Hi all,
Anyone have access to the Electoral Register for years 1916-1922?
I would be really grateful for the residents information for 83 Saltmead
Road.
The address has come up for me on a marriage certificate in 1916 for one
person and then again in 1922 on a death cert for someone else. I’m
trying to connect two people so need to get as much information as I can
for this address for those years.
Thanks so much,
Ellen
