Hi, Sue and Gareth,
There is a useful web-site by Barbara Dixon at
http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm This explains the
various columns on BMD certificates for Wales and England. Sean has pointed
out some of the problems that exist when trying to find an event in the
various indexes.. Most of the sites that offer transcribed GRO Indexes have
careful checking procedures. Sadly the same cannot be said about the
preparation of the GRO Registers and of the original GRO Indexes.
The local Registrar makes copies of his new registrations each quarter and
sends them to London. He could make errors. The copy may not reach London.
It may be late and so be entered in the wrong Quarter. In London the
returns were copied by hand and depend on the ability of the scribe to read
the handwriting. Some would look beautiful but be incredibly difficult to
read. The p[reparation of the index seems to have required the clerks to
prepare a slip for each entry, these were then sorted into the required
order, and then transcribed again to make the index. An entry may have
been overlooked, a slip may have 'escaped', and then there are the usual
transcription errors. Some of the commercial copies of the GRO Index draw
our attention to suspect entries, such as the Registration District not
matching the area code.
If you can buy your certificate from the local Registrar, your copy is very
close to the original. Yes, there may still be transcription problems but
they are likely to be significantly less.
The Lancashire Family History Societies are working with the Lancashire
Registrars to put local indexes on-line with more information from 1837.

Hope this helps

Subject: Re: [GLA] death information
Hello Sue
On more modern certificates the age at death is collaborated from the the
registrars index or if they aren't sure they contact the relevant registrar
to confirm the birth details. having said that I have registered a death
where the birth cannot be confirmed. When I checked the Census for 1891,
1901 and 1910 it appeared that the relative had an older sister with the
same name.
The death registered was that of my grandmother, why they couldn't find her
birth record is anyone business but the registrar doesn't have to put the
correct details in and doesn't have to correct any mistakes they made, or
didn't, unless things have changed since their office was taken on by the
Home Office recently!
Regards
Gareth
