The records for 1631 to 1706 which the IGI records as Swansea (Saint
Thomas) C022181 (or C02218-1) 1631-1706 would appear likely to be
transcriptions of registers from the Parish Church of Swansea (St Mary's)
which are held in West Glamorgan Archives as shown as <P/123/CW/1> Baptisms,
marriages and burials. 1631-1706 on page
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=33382
Why the IGI transcribers referred to them as St Thomas I don't know. Maybe
there is some evidence somewhere that the parish church of Swansea was at
some time known as something other than St Mary's.
Although the small hamlet east of the river Tawe was known as St Thomas for
a very long time, it was administered as part of the parish of St Mary's
until 1888, when it became a separate parish of St Thomas. For a few years
before that there had been a prefabricated 'iron church' in the St Thomas
district ( see for example in the 'Cambrian' of 17 November 1876 a concert
at Kilvey to raise funds for the new iron church at St Thomas). Also

CHURCH. PREACHER REV. D. PARKER MORGAN, VICAR OF ABERAVON.P5
However, your query is about one of the very earliest baptism records that
survive from the Swansea area. It appears that the naming (as transcribed by
IGI) was according to the patronymic system, where the child received the
father's forename as surname. Other Rees entries in the same source have
Rees ( or variant spellings) as surname.
Findmypast.co.uk have images of the pages from this 1631-1706 register in
their Glamorgan Baptisms record set, and record them as referring to Swansea
St Mary's. The actual record shows Margarett the daughter of Rees ap Evan
and Findmypast has transcribed her as Margarett Evan. It is always worth
looking at the original records (or photographic images of them) as far as
possible, rather than relying on other people's interpretations.
It is unlikely that any other records of the family will survive unless Rees
Evan was a prominent citizen, in which case his name may appear on some of
the very few records that survive for the area at that time. West Glamorgan
Archives might be a place to start enquiring about what if any other records
of similar age survive, but I am not optimistic that you will find anything.

I am looking for the family of Margrett Rees, baptized 6 Aug 1639,
St.
Thomas, Swansea. The record online says her father was "Rees Evan" but I
can't find anything else about this family. Any suggestions?
Sue
