When you search for a Birth, Marriage or Death on FreeBMD
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ you will see that the search results show the
district underlined as a hyperlink
For example
Births Dec 1891
Hughes Esther Lettice Haverfordwest 11a 1122
Clicking on the underlined entry for Haverfordwest takes you to an
information page which has this line:
The district Haverfordwest spans the boundaries of the counties of Dyfed and
Pembrokeshire; information about it can be found here
The word 'here' is underlined as a hyperlink, and takes you to
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/haverfordwest.html
This has a line Registers currently held at : Pembrokeshire. where again
Pembrokeshire is underlined as a hyperlink, in this case to
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html#819 which gives a table of
data about various register offices, with addresses, phone numbers, email
addresses and websites. In this case
Pembrokeshire
The Register Office Tower Hill Haverfordwest SA61 1SS
01437 775176
01437 779357
registrars(a)pembrokeshire.gov.uk
Superintendent Registrar
Website (last accessed 31.12.2012) where again Website is underlined as
a hyperlink to
http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=646,101,558,599,602&p...
[ I recommend that people searching BMDs in the UK should bookmark
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/index.html or
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/index.html which tells you a great deal
about each registration district and the area it covered at various dates]
The same process of following hyperlinks from FreeBMD search results can be
followed in each case. There may be a small number of errors, but if these
are discovered my experience is that the maintainer of the ukbmd web pages
is happy to check and update within a short time.
Even if you use one of the big commercial providers to seek out BMD data,
the extra functionality of the FreeBMD web site may well be useful to
discover how to get certificates without paying an extra premium. If you are
happy to go to the GRO for certificates, the straightforward link below
FreeBMD search results
"Has our search engine found the record you are seeking?
Click here to learn what to do now." with 'here' underlined as a
hyperlink to
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html
and a link to
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
There is also a description on the FreeBMD page about 'Obtaining a
certificate from a local Register Office' which also takes you into the
ukbmd pages.
As this is a query which recurs occasionally, it may be worth putting some
information about getting BMD certificates in England and Wales on the
Familysearch research wiki.
Please note that Esther L Hughes may have married, though of course she was
exactly of the generation which saw so many young men slaughtered in the
first world war, and left so many 'old maids'. FreeBMD finds three possible
marriages, an unlikely one in a London district 1908, one in Pwllheli, North
Wales, in 1919, and one in 1931 in Birmingham. The North Wales one may have
been born in 1894 in Holywell, and the Birmingham one in 1909 in Birmingham.
The London one matches the name of an 1855 birth.

Subject: [GLA] Local registrar offices
Thank you for the suggestions about how to get a certificate. I'm
not
familiar with where to look for local registrar offices. I have a child
born in 1891--Esther L (perhaps Lettice) in the Dec. Qtr, Haverfordwest
District Vol 11a Pg 1122--for whom I would like a certificate. Her parents
should be Thomas George and Catherine Maria (Mason) Hughes. There is a
death for an Esther L. Hughes who died at age 55 in the Radnor West Dist.
1946 June Qtr Vol 11b pg 103. I'm trying to determine if these two are the
same. There is another Esther L. Hughes born 1889 dying at age 67 in 1956
June Qtr in the Conway Dist. Vol 8a pg 118.
Which registrar offices would be involved with this information?
I'm also interested in a certificate for Elizabeth Esther Hughes born 1889
March Qtr. in the Cardigan Dist. Vol 11b pg 3. What office would that be
found at?
