Whoops, sending this again to list, as I think I may have just replied to Jill on this.
I use the GRO because I can pay on line. I have tried to buy certs from local registrars
as often they are in more need of the funding but they don't always have the facility
of on-line payment. When I went to get an international money order here in France to buy
a certificate, it cost more in charges than the price of the actual certificate. When I
was in Wales last year I went to a local office and the certificate cost me £15, and they
did not photocopy the original certificate but recopied the details on to a new one,
taking away the pleasure of seeing the actual signatures of my ancestors. I was quite
disappointed by the service and the off-hand treatment by the person I saw.
I think it depends on the individual Office as I had a lot of help from Blaenau Gwent
Office a couple of years ago, who found the correct certificate and were really so very
helpful.
best wishes Gwen

Dear Lyn and others, Local registrars are truly helpful. Email them and ask
them the best way to send money and also ask if they have the cert you need
too.
My best wishes, Jill

Yes they were good the one time I used them but not always easily accessible
for ordering certificates from overseas. :)

Well, personally I use the Local Registrar, as they know the area so well
and take time to look properly.
I've said this so often though.;-((
My best wishes, Jill

Hi JoLynn
It depends on who you get. :) I recently had this same dilemma with a birth
certificate. I gave all the details including that there was only a mother
Eliza (she was single) and no father as there were 2 in the same district
with the same name in the same quarter. Because of that I didn't give Vol
and page number, expecting them to search and see the one without a father
but no. :( They sent one that had two parents. I was OK with that and was
happy to order the other one but I didn't know which Vol and Page no. the
one they sent was to enable me to order the other one. So I wrote and asked.
They apologised and said they had sent the wrong certificate and would send
me the correct one asap and would I return the incorrect one when it
arrived. It finally arrived and was for someone born in Northumberland and I
was asking for Suffolk and the mother's name was not even Eliza! Contacted
them again and they apologised again and sent out the correct one.
So some of their staff search well and others ....well .... :)
