Thank you, Jeff. I do also have some ancestors whose birth certs record the births being
at James St., but since the others didn’t have “street” as part of the The Green or Latt
was the reason for my question. And another curious thing, at least to me, is that two
children were born at “Green” but their death certs (they both died in childhood) are
recorded at “Latt”, even though some children born later were born at “Green”. So it
appears the family hadn’t moved. Later on, though, more children were born at James St.
I really wish I had a better grasp of the area from the past so I could better sort out
place names in my own head. It is sort of like walking around with blinders on. You did
help me out a few years ago when I was trying to understand “juxta-neath”, hamlets, etc.
etc., and I appreciated that. In writing up family narratives, I’d like to be able to
better describe places to relatives who will be reading the histories.
The references you included in your email make an interesting read.
Thank you for the map link, and I’ll see what google maps turns up for me. I’ll take a
look.
Regards,
Nancy

Hi Nancy
These are either streets or small areas of Neath. Latt sometimes turns up as 'The
Latt'.
The Green, Neath and Zoar Road, Neath (presumably at or near the same place as Zoar Row,
near Zoar chapel) can still be found on Google Maps.
You can find a street map at scale 1:500 of Neath in 1878 at
www.old-maps.co.uk. Zoar Row
and Zoar Chapel are visible between the railway tracks and the canal, north of the
Station.
Looking for references in the local newspaper (
www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian) for
'Latt' I found this advert in 1879 which describes where it was
MINING AND INDUSTRY, SERVICE INDUSTRY, GAS 25 July 1879 NEATH COUNCIL TO LET THE OLD
GASWORKS, THE LATT, LONG FRONTAGE TO NEATH CANAL NAVIGATION. P1
And a bit earlier
RELIGION, METHODIST 03 January 1862 SERMON BY DR JONES AT METHODIST CHAPEL,THE
LATT,NEATH,AND SATURDAY NIGHT MEETINGS.
And
MINING AND INDUSTRY, SERVICE INDUSTRY, GAS 04 October 1861 NEATH GAS WORKS:2 NEW
GASOMETERS AT THE LATT. CONTRACTOR - MR.HICKORY.P5.
In 1878 map the gas works and the Methodist Chapel seem to have been in James Street,
near the ruins of Neath Castle. Comparing this with a modern map, it seems to be the car
park for Morrisons Supermarket. [Incidentally for some reason Google Maps chooses to label
the Neath Canal as the River Neath.]
There also seem to have been regular appearances in the courts of people who lived at The
Latt. For example:
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT AND POLICE, DRUNKENNESS, VAGRANCY,PUBLIC NUISANCE, SURETIES 14
September 1888 NEATH BOROUGH SESSIONS:ROBERT EDWARDS,PEDLAR, THE LATT,RE. STRAYING
DONKEY.
There are a few intriguing references to 'Under the Latt' as in
HEALTH AND WELFARE, POOR LAW, GUARDIANS 10 May 1878 NEATH GUARDIANS: 70 YEAR OLD FEMALE
PAUPER, PREVIOUSLY LIVED UNDER THE LATT, TO BE RELEASED FROM WORKHOUSE. P6
I wonder whether the castle ruins were known as The Latt. Maybe someone local to Neath
can tell us
Jeff

Subject: [GLA] Neath Road/Street Names 1800's
On copies of birth and death certs for ancestors in Neath from the mid-late 1800’s, the
place of the event also includes “Green”, “Zoar Row”, “Latt”. I just want to confirm that
these were names of roads/streets.
Thank you,
Nancy Edwards
