Hi Eric
The birth entry in question is December quarter 1890, not 1889, with maiden
name GADD confirmed by GRO
HAWKINS, THOMAS WILLIAM GADD
GRO Reference: 1890 D Quarter in PONTYPRIDD Volume 11A Page 442
The De Ruvigny's entry actually refers to Ystrad parish church (close to
Porth and Tonypandy, in the Rhondda) not to Ystrad Mynach. I see you have
now noted that.
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Ystradyfodwg/Ystrad applies. This is
in Pontypridd registration district. Apparently no registers from this
church have yet been deposited.
https://www.churchinwales.org.uk/structure/places/benefices/?id=716 seems to
show that St Stephen's, Ystrad Rhondda, is still functioning, although
Google maps street view for its postcode CF41 7RR appears to show no notice
board and the main door boarded up, though that may have been for repair.
The vicar's details may be found if required.
There was a Thomas HAWKINS married in Pontypridd registration district in
December quarter 1908, but there was no Margaret Thomas listed on the same
GRO page.
Marriages Dec 1908
HAWKINS Thomas Pontypridd 11a 922
HENDY Sarah Jane Pontypridd 11a 922
HIER Mary Ann Pontypridd 11a 922
THOMAS William Pontypridd 11a 922
De Ruvigny's was collated from information supplied by family. In order to
receive a payment as a widow she would have to say that she was married to
him. According to the 'effects' register on ancestry she is listed as sole
legatee.
There are some mysteries in this research. I will also copy to someone not
on the list with detailed Rhondda knowledge.
Jeff

Thank you to the several people who have kindly replied to my query. May I
answer the points made in a single post and I apologise for any repetition
of information I posted earlier.
The site "Soldiers died in WW1" has this information : Name: Thomas
Hawkins, Birth Place: Porth, Glam,., Residence: Rhondda, Glam.
Death Date: 11 Jul 1917, Death Place: France and Flanders, Enlistment
Place: Tonypandy, Rank: Sergeant, Regiment: Welsh Regiment, Battalion:
17th Battalion, Regimental Number: 25977, Type of Casualty: Killed in
action.
Porth, Glamorgan is only about 6 miles from Ystrad Mynach.
The military obituary is found in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour,
1914-1919 on Ancestry. It states that he was a coal miner but the 1911
entry is Stone Quarryman . There were stone quarries at Porth, Cornwall and
that of Rees Jones at Porth, Glamorgan.
The CWGC site has little detail about this Thomas HAWKINS. (The use of the
middle name is erratic).
This reference to Porth aroused my suspicions that the 1911 birth place
could have been confused with the one in Cornwall somehow but I admit that
the reverse could also be true. However the 1891 and 1901 censuses both have
Wales as the birthplace.
There is a GRO record of the birth in the December quarter of 1889 at
Pontypridd but there is no suitable one in Cornwall.
I have always thought, perhaps wrongly, that births had to be registered
where they happened.
Thomas William HAWKINS' parents were born in Somerset and their marriage was
registered at Pontypridd in 1889 (HAWKINS/GADD). The father remarried in
1898. The weight of evidence suggests that the 1911 census birth place is
wrong Before buying certificates I need to talk to my daughter in law for
whom I am doing this work. She is related to the owner of the "tiredmum2"
tree with whom I am in contact about this issue..
I am sorry about the length of this post but at least I have collected all
my evidence in one place.
Thank you again,
Eric Millward
