Jean,
This is a bit of a puzzle. James and Mary Jane White seems to be in
Cowbridge Road, Llandaff, in 1871 with daughters Emma Jane, 3, and
Sophia, 2, both born in Llandaff. However, FreeBMD doesn't show a
Sophia White born anywhere in Glamorgan between 1862 and 1871, and the
only Emma Jane was born in Cardiff in 1865. The GRO web site show her
to have the mother's maiden name WARN:
WHITE, EMMA JANE WARN
GRO Reference: 1865 Mar Quarter in CARDIFF Volume 11A Page 252
If the same Mary Jane is widowed at 48 Glynne St., Canton Cardiff, in
1891 then her eldest child still at home is Emma, 23. Other children are
Mary A, 20; Beatrice, 18; Alfred, 15; and Emily, 3. I don't know when
James died but Mary J is 56 so Emily is unlikely to be her daughter -
probably a granddaughter.
GRO has these births:
WHITE, MARY ANN WOODS
GRO Reference: 1871 S Quarter in CARDIFF Volume 11A Page 241
WHITE, BEATRICE MAUD WOODS
GRO Reference: 1873 M Quarter in CARDIFF Volume 11A Page 255
WHITE, JOHN WILLIAM WOODS
GRO Reference: 1874 M Quarter in OF CARDIFF Volume 11A Page 326
1881 they are Mill Lane Ely when James White is not listed, byt Mary J
is still shown as Married, not Widow, the children are Emma J, 12; Sarah
L, 10; Mary Ann, 9; Beatrice M, 7; John W, 6; and David A, 5.
I can find no others born in Cardiff with the mother's maiden name WOODS.
FreeBMD has no White - Woods marriage between 1860 and 1891 anywhere in
the UK.
A puzzle indeed!

I am trying to get confirmation of the maiden name of my
husband's
great grandmother, Mrs. Mary White, possibly Mary Anne/Jane Wills of
South Morgan Street, Cardiff.
I do have a copy of a South Wales Echo newspaper clipping with photo,
to celebrate her 101st birthday. It states she was the oldest citizen
in Cardiff.
She was born in Plymouth according to the newspaper and she came to
Cardiff in her teens.
Her husband was James White. At her death in 1937 she left three
daughters, two sons, 38 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Can anyone help with her family line?
Thanks.
Always,
Jean
