Up to that time that area was part of the Ottoman Empire who in 1914 formed
an alliance with Germany. It then became the British aim to drive the Turks
of the Ottoman Empire and the Germans out. This action was started in 1914.
In June 1917 General Sir Edmund Allenby took over command of British Forces
from General Sir Archibald Murray. He immediately went on the offensive in
Gaza and a bombardment commenced in October 1917. British troops then
entered Gaza the following month.
The story of this time and place was far more complicated than my one
paragraph description and the repercussions of British and French actions
there in the early 20th century are still being felt today.

Subject: [GLA] battle of Gaza 1917
Hello List,
I thought someone would be interested that my niece visited Beersheba War
Cemetry near Jerusalem this year, and took pictures of my great uncle's
grave who was killed in the Battle of Gaza 1917.
He was private David Evans of 5th Welsh Regiment and was from Brynheulog
Aberamman Aberdare, son of John and Anne Evans. His brother Willam
Peregrine Evans was in same regiment but survived. They were previously coal
miners at Aberamman and were born at Maenclochog Pembrokeshire.
There does not seem to be any mention of this campaign and battle in the
media.I think the General in charge was General Allenbey.
