As deep pits became the norm (as distinct from drifts), it could take
quite a long time (years rather than months) to sink the shafts to develop
a new mine. (It was in fact in 1872 that it became compulsory for a mine
to have two shafts). So I should think your forebears' declarations in
1871 probably imply that they were then engaged in this primary
engineering, rather than actually mining coal.
