What rank was Philip Clifford?

is about a
Sergeant Clifford of South Wales Borderers:
" Wounded Borderers : It is reported in Brecon that Sergeants Yeo, Prout,
Pitt, and Lovett, South Wales Borderers, have been wounded. Much sym- pathy
is felt with Mr Clifford, High-street, Brecon, m the death of his son,
Sergeant Clifford, South Wales Borderers, who is supposed to have been
killed in the battle of the Aisne."
From The Brecon Radnor Express Carmarthen and Swansea Valley Gazette and
Brynmawr District Advertiser
15th October 1914
BUT The Brecon County Times Neath Gazette and General Advertiser for the
Counties of Brecon Carmarthen Radnor Monmouth Glamorgan Cardigan Montgomery
Hereford 29th October 1914 refers to Lance-sergeant W.T. Clifford, who seems
to have been the person referred to.
The Brecon Radnor Express Carmarthen and Swansea Valley Gazette and Brynmawr
District Advertiser
3rd December 1914 includes a graphic description of the death of that
Sergeant Clifford by a wounded soldier returned from the front.
Once you start searching Welsh Newspapers Online and put in one of the war
years 1914-1918 with a name, some casualties appear repeatedly, others not
at all. What strikes you is the numbers of names.

Subject: [GLA] War Memorials and obituaries WWI
Hi.
I'm trying to find out if 3 relatives are on War Memorials in the Cardiff
area. Or were recorded in newspapers.
They all lived in Cardiff area.
Great Uncle Phillip CLIFFORD was part of the BEF and had served in the South
Wales Borderers since 1897. He was posted missing 14th October
1914 and date of death on his war grave is 21st October 1914.
My Great Uncle, William Jack EVANS Welsh Regiment, posted missing in August
1917 and confirmed as dead the following year.
My grandfather, David CLIFFORD died July 1920 from wounds and is buried in a
War Grave in Cathays Cemetery. He served in South Wales Borderers from 1897
- 1909. Called up to 4th Battalion of the same regiment in WWI and entered
the war at Gallipoli, then Mesopotamia. At some point he was transferred to
2nd Garrison Battalion of Northumberland Fusiliers, Makina.
I would dearly like to know if any of them are commemorated on a memorial or
were mentioned in any newspapers. I do not know which newspapers would be
likely to have done so. Any pointers would be welcome and appreciated.
Helen
