Hi Jenny,
I had my tonsils removed at what became St Tydfil's Hospital, and recall it
well.
You can see the building and plans and more information at the excellent
Peter Higginbotham's website.

Best of luck and take Gwen's advice.

Subject: [GLA] Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse Records at Glamorgan Archives
I am hoping there is someone on the list who has first hand experience of
having had dealings with the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse records at Glamorgan
Archives please.
I will be visiting from Australia in December so any advice that can prepare
me for my visit would be welcome thank you.
My great grandfather John REES was born at the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse on
21 June 1858. From what I can see this Workhouse had only opened in 1857
with records starting from July of that year?
In March 1860 John, his parents Hugh REES and Martha nee EVANS (married 5
June 1848) and three surviving siblings sailed from London for Nelson New
Zealand. My great grandfather John was the only child to have been born in
the Workhouse that I am aware of.
From what I can understand from the Glamorgan Archives web page is
that
possibly the Admission and Discharge Register Volume I would be interested
in viewing is UM/28/1. I am interested to know how long the family were
resident at the Workhouse before their emigration. If there is any person
who has had experience in viewing the Admission and Discharge Registers for
the Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse I would be very grateful in hearing from them.
I am also curious as to how an illiterate couple with 4 young children
living in a Workhouse in 1858 would gain the information or the near 60
pound fare for emigration to New Zealand? I have researched this from the
immigration details I have been able to obtain in New Zealand but am having
difficulty locating information from the Welsh end.
With appreciation,
Jenny
