Hi Denis,
I have encountered the very same with regard to non offering to help with
any payment, but I suppose that it is our own hobby and not that, generally,
of our relatives.
Now I am getting on in years, I am getting braver about hinting and for once
I have had some free certificates sent to me.
We [Barry and I ] have also encountered people using our hard won
information to attach to their particular tree, we know how incorrect the
link is, but nothing makes them take it down.
So I have now given up trying and simply offer my research for anyone who
wishes to view this. I leave it to their conscience what they do with my
research.
My best wishes, Jill

Subject: [GLA] uploading to the web...
I have been following this thread and shaking my head in agreement with
other listers
I too shared my research with a cousin with the proviso that it not be put
on the web.He promptly did so onto ancestry mistakes and all. I don't share
my tree with anyone [ some people think i'm a grump] anymore -this tree has
been uploaded onto another family tree by someone who isn't even related!
i've spent countless hours reseaching in record offices librarys etc and
spent lots of money in the process. No one has ever said can we buy a few
cert's, can we help with that cost- rather can we have a copy of your tree.I
will share limited imfomation but only with blood relations.I say this as i
have found with the advent of popularity of genealogy and the proliferation
of family research web sites people I call name collectors. They compile
trees with all and sundry related or not ,then boast about how many names
are on their tree
This in turn leads to dead ends you find a reseacher with an ancestor's
name, you contact them and the response is "no were not actually related " a
good example for this is genes reunited. Ive even had someone say I'm not
even sure they are related.
What really stands out in all of this is the total waste of such a great
resource as the WORLD WIDE WEB , sites like the LDS, there is now such a
load of rubbish on it its nearly a waste of time using it the same goes for
ANCESTRY - OH and has anyone ever confronted a related submitter to these
site and asked where did you come up with this rubbish you call our family
tree -answer always is "but i didn't submitt anything" -yeah how come your
listed as the submitter.
I actually wrote to a submitter on ancestry [who was an active member ]
that they had the wrong person on their tree and would they mind swapping
imfomation to correct the situation -they never responded.
what a awfully legacy to leave to future generations !
cheers
