Hello againI'm hoping someone can help again, this time I am stuck with an
Aunt of my mothers called Margaret REES, according to my mother she would
have been born around 1902 in Merthyr Tydfyl, to parents David REES 1858 and
Jane RICHARDS 1869. She supposedly married an Isaac, or John or combination
of those two names, RICHARDS. There is a daughter Elizabeth RICHARDS 1930
from that marriage.
We assume that she was Margaret only because she was known as Aunty Maggie.
Her husband was known as Uncle Jack, but my mother remembers writing to them
and addressing the envelope using the name Isaac Richards.
I checked out the possibility that she may have been my mothers Great Aunt
rather than Aunt as turned out to be the case with her Aunty Millie (morphed
into Great Aunt Amelia) but it doesn't seem likely in this case.
However hard I (and others) have looked, I can't find a marriage for
Margaret. Nor can I find a birth, although I have looked much further than
the guessed date of 1902.
The only marriages between a Margaret REES and a RICHARDS were to a Rowland
in 1924 in Neath, and a Thomas in 1930 in Llanelly.
I've looked for other possibilities eg that Margaret may have been her
second name, and the only thing I could come up with was a Harriet REES who
married a John RICHARDS in 1921 in Llandilofawr. 'Margaret's" sister Mary
married there so it's a possibility. How one becomes Maggie from Harriet I'm
not sure!
I find it odd that there is only the one child, Elizabeth, (known as Betty)
born in 1930 Merthyr, and wonder if Margaret married twice, but that seems
impossible to find out. There are too many Margaret REES marriages which
could be first marriages.
I also wondered if her given name may have been Elizabeth and searched
accordingly but only found an Elizabeth REES marrying a David RICHARDS in
Llandilofawr in 1918.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed with this little mystery?
Thanks :-)
Christine
