Found Drowned At Cardiff
Early on Monday morning the body of a man, named Charles Snook, 51 years of
age, of 71, Minny-street, Cathays, was found floating in the canal on the North-road,
Cardiff by his son, Ernest Snook.
On Sunday deceased left his house rather mysteriously, and without speaking to
anybody. The suspicions of his family were accordingly aroused, and the son went in search
of him, with the above result. Deceased was a labourer, and had been in delicate health
for some time. The body was taken out of the water by Police Constable Clark, who conveyed
it to the Bute-street mortuary.

Doctor’s Opinion On Case Of Drowning
In the next investigation the jury had to decide whether Charles Snook (49),
labourer, 71, Minny-street, Cardiff, had met his death by misadventure or whether he
committed suicide.
Deceased left his house quietly about ten o’clock on Sunday night and nothing
more was heard of him until the son, Ernest Snook, saw the body floating in the Glamorgan
Canal, running parallel with North-road, on Monday morning.
Mrs. Snook, the widow, said her husband had been very depressed lately and in
indifferent health.
Ernest Snook, the son, said that on the bank near where he saw his father’s
body in the water were his (the deceased’s) hat and pipe.
Dr. Tidswell said that the deceased had been suffering for some months from
great depression of spirits and a very severe choking sensation in the throat. He
considered the cause a serious one and brought it before the notice of the authorities,
and he was examined by a magistrate. In his (Dr. Tidswell’s) opinion, deceased ought to
have been taken to the asylum. After being examined by a doctor at the workhouse he was
allowed to go home. Deceased had several times threatened to drown himself and he
(witness) had told Mrs. Snook that he ought to be looked after.
The jury bought in a verdict of “Found Drowned.”
