Hi Tommy,
A quick google found this (
http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/h.html ) it shows a
hobler as someone who drags or hauls a barge, a dock labourer or even an
unlicensed pilot. Does that fit with anything you know about your man
already? Harb could be harbour maybe?
I'm sure you know he was a coalminer in the 1871. My JOHNs are also in
Pentyrch around this time.
Don't know if that's any help. I have to agree though, the bloke's writing
leaves a lot to be desired.
best regards,
Merv

Subject: [GLA] Understanding the handwriting on a census
Hi
On the 1881 census for Pentyrch RG11/5275 there is a John Evans. The
transcription (on Ancestry) of his occupation says 'Hobler (Harb and Ser)'
but I make the text in the brackets to be (Harb** Serv) or could be (Harb
&
Serv). The Serv bit is presumably servant. The 'Harb' bit could be
'haberdasher' - any other ideas / explanation?
Thanks
Tommy
