There are times when the mind plays wonderful things. Thanks to Wendy
for making things a little clearer but I think I now have the route.
Cowbridge and the St. Hilary Tv mast seem to come to the fore. So, with
reference to a more modern map and these roads existed back then.....
Skirting around Llantrisant, you would head towards Cowbridge via Talbot
Green. Arriving there you take a left and head East towards Bonvilston.
I well recall, and admire the Tv mast which obviously was not there at
the turn of the century. Just after Bonvilston you take a right at
Sycamore Cross in to the country lanes that lead almost directly to the
Island.
The car route to Porthcawl is much clearer in my mind. But that is
another story. :)
I have just realised why I failed geography at O'level.

Dear David,
If you passed the Barry Zoo along 'Five Mile Lane' then I'd suggest your
father drove through Pendoylan/Peterston , Sycamore Cross [Bonvilston], and
then the Five Mile Lane, leading to Weycock Cross and down to the Island, a
very rural route.
If this is the same zoo which was open in the 1960s - 70s, I recall it
being quite an upsetting place to visit, thankfully these days zoo animals
usually live in better conditions.
Best regards,
Wendy
