Jeff,
Thnx for filling me in on that. The entry was indeed March. At least I can
tell mum that she was born ;)
And checking the coverage, they do not appear to have done 1953 births yet.

Births are shown in the GRO indexes (the ones transcribed by FreeBMD)
in
quarters, so the only months ever shown before 1983 will be March, June,
September and December. March quarter covers January, February, March, and
so on.
And of course people were allowed up to 6 weeks to register a birth, so it
is not unusual to find a December birth registered in the March quarter of
the following year. So it might have been your mother after all.....
Again, in some families the birthday celebrated is not the date shown on
the birth certificate - though that was more common years ago.
FreeBMD shows the coverage of each quarter by following the link on the
FreeBMD home page
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ just above the series of red
'buttons'
The transcribing of the records is carried out by teams of dedicated
volunteers and contains index information for the period 1837-1983. PLEASE
NOTE: WE HAVE NOT YET TRANSCRIBED THE WHOLE INDEX. A breakdown by event
and year can be viewed here. The link is to
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/progress.shtml
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Ystradyfodwg/ shows that Clydach vale
was in Ystradyfodwg parish.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/ shows that Ystradyfodwg was in
Pontypridd registration district from 1st August 1863. Before that it was
in Merthyr Tydfil registration district.
If the year 1876 was derived from census data, remember that age 5 in 1881
census (April 1881) could mean any time after April 1885 up to April 1886.
It is only the calculations done on the census web sites that say he was
born in 1876.
There were two John REES births in Pontypridd district in June quarter
1875, two in September quarter 1875 and two in March quarter 1876.
Have you checked all those six possibles with the local registrar or GRO?
If so, is there a possibility the child was born before parents married,
and birth registered with mother's previous surname, though subsequently
known by father's surname?
Jeff
