Subject: [GLA] Evan EVANS and family
This family seem to be in the 1851 Census as lodgers in the household
of
David Thomas in Trehafod, Llanwonno parish.
The reference is 2457/Folio 033/Schedule 034
The household ( as from Glamorgan FHS 1851 Census index) is
David THOMAS Head 33 M Coal Miner b Aberaeron,Cardiganshire
Mary THOMAS Wife 28 M b Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire
John THOMAS Son 2 b Llanwonno, Glamorgan
Evan EVANS Lodger 31 M Coal Miner b Llandybie Carmarthenshire
Jemima EVANS Lodger 27 M b Llanfabon,Glamorgan
William EVANS Lodger 4 b Llanfabon,Glamorgan
The description of the enumeration district is as follows ( from same
source)
1851 CENSUS OF LLANWONNO PARISH (TREHAFOD AREA). REF.H.O.107/2457,E.D.1C
"From Hendrarees to Gloge Fanhaulog, Rhydygwriddin, Llwynperdid,
Llestnant,
Blaenhenwysg, bounded by Henwysg Brook to Rhondda, and
up
to Nythbran, Hafod Ucha, and Hafod."
Glamorgan Family History Society publishes many resources and offers other
facilities to members. See
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wlsglfhs/
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llandybie/ and
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llanfabon/ describe the locations
this
couple are said to be from.
Given that the wife was from Llanfabon, just on the other side of the
river
Taff from Llanwonno, it would seem possible that they married in one of
these two parishes.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/ shows that both parishes were in
Merthyr
Tydfil registration district from the start of civil registration in July
1837 to 1863.
A possible marriage is in June quarter 1854 reference Merthyr Tydfil 11a
537
when Evan EVANS and Jemima PHILLIPS appear among six names on the same
page.
( from
www.freebmd.org.uk ) It is possible that there might be another
marriage where the page numbers have been hard to read. This would have
been after the birth of several children, so may be a bit unlikely.
However, there is a marriage where Evan EVANS and Jemima WILLIAMS appear
on
the same index page in Neath registration district in March quarter 1846,
ref 26 613 . That matches rather better with the birth of the son William.
She would also have been 21 or 22 so free to marry without requiring
parental permission.
There are two Jemima WILLIAMS of roughly the right age in the surviving
portions of the 1841 census, one apparently the wife of John Williams,
Iron
Miner in Court Street, Heolwermod, Merthyr with a child Ann aged 9 months,
the other
in Penhow Hirwaun, Hirwaun Ironworks, apparently daughter of Morgan
WILLIAMS
an agent, with a sister Cesiah (Welsh spelling of Keziah) and older
siblings
Daniel, a collier, and Jane.
Hirwaun is not far from the boundary of Neath registration district, on or
close to the road from Neath to Merthyr.
The reference for this entry is 64 069 159
The enumeration district is described as "That part of Cwmdare at the
Hirwaun Iron Works."
Morgan WILLIAMS was quite a common name. Someone of that name stood as a
Chartist candidate against Sir John GUEST in the parliamentary election of
1841 for Merthyr Tydfil.
There is a household in Hirwaun in 1951 consisting of Daniel Williams,
shopkeeper, 30 and his sister 'Kaziah' Williams age 24, both born Rhymney,
Monmouthshire, with a lodger John DAVIES, 28, Engineer. These might be
part
of the above family. The address is one house away from those labelled as
Penhow Hirwaun.
Migration of a miner to Adelaide suggests seeking employment in the Burra
Copper mines, which exported copper ore to the copper works in the Swansea
area ( including some in the Neath district) in the 1850s.
Just to get you started.
