Hi Kenneth
I am not certain as to which of my several lookup offerings you are asking me
to search ? There is no such thing as a baptismal index for All of Wales, but
I expect you knew that !
It occurs to me that you are probably referring to the book "The Surnames of
Wales",
if you were, then good thinking. It does have an entry for the Picton surname
and it almost certainly originates from Pembrokeshire, the county of greatest
incidence , although some sightings in the west of Carmarthenshire as well.
One of those names which did not develop via the patronymic system, it relates
to a place i.e Picton Castle in Pem.
A William de Picton erected the castle, and a William de Pyketon was a
burgess of Haverford in the reign of Edward I.
Apparently the name is seen in the C17 in the hundreds of Dungleddy, Rhos and
Cemais.
Now the really good news is that on the PEM lookup page you will find a
volunteer with some PEM baptism records for searching. Go there and put in
your request, include all the information again.May even find the marriage if
it was pre 1837.
If no success, try the IGI too, one at a time though !
Oh, one other thing you might try is ask for a search on the
Passenger/Immigration List[into the USA], that lookup link is on the All Wales
lookup page , also on
http://members.aol.com/FamChaplin/lookup.html , again no guarantee of
finding the one you want. Follow the guidelines on this one exactly.
Good luck, you may need it !
