Dear folk
I happened to notice your query and would like to point out
that the REBECCA-ites were the original anti-ironmaster secret society.
In the USA they were the rebellious group the Pinkerton Agency went after
sometime in the 19th century. Did you ever read The Hosts of Rebecca,
about the Merthyr riots? Hope this helps--or adds fuel to the fire.

Hi Huw,
I posted the question in social.culture.welsh and got a little
information.
There seem to have been possibly two orders of *Rechabites*, one an
Independent and one slightly more secret. Both seem to have been
associated with teetotalism but the Welsh one may have originally been
also associated with some struggle against the iron-masters.
If you pop into scw you will pick up any information that follows up.
