In previous postings I have recounted search for husband of my
greatgrandmother Emily Louise ENDICOTT (m. RIMRON). This past week
discovered marriage certificate stating her name as "Emily Louisa Davies
ENDICOTT", daughter of Henry ENDICOTT (deceased). I wondered at extra name
"Davies". Marriage and subsequent residence in 1903 on a birth certificate
is listed as 103 Wellington Street, Canton (Cardiff) and one witness to the
1897 wedding named "Jane Davey".
Another friend has since found the following in the 1881 Glamorgan census
in Llandaff; 103 Wellington:
GLAMORGAN Piece 5281 Folio 143 Page 26
Llandaff - 103 Wellington ?
Name Age Occupation Born
DAVEY William Head 30 labourer SOM Nether Stowey
DAVEY Mary J Wife 26 --- SOM Cockscombe
DAVEY Emma J Dau 5 --- Cardiff
DAVEY Lucy M Dau 2 --- Cardiff
DAVEY William H Son 6months Cardiff
HADICOTE Emma Lodg 58 (W) Annuitant DEV Frenston
HADICOTE Emily L Dau 10 Scholar GLA Merthyr
HADICOTE William Head 25 (M) Labourer GLS ?
HADICOTE Rowena Wife 26 (M) --- GLS ?
HADICOTE Eliza Dau 3months Cardiff
***
There is the eventual witness "Emma Jane Davey" and what looks like Emily L
listed as "HADICOTE". Further pieces seem to fit with Emily's mother being
the widow Emma HADICOTE.
Is it reasonable to suppose that for some reason Emily L HADICOTE became
Emily Louisa Davies ENDICOTT??
I'm also having trouble with her inferred birthyear (by figuring an
approximation based on age listed on various censuses): She is 35 for a
1910 West Virginia census; 24 for the 1897 marriage certificate; and 10
for the 1881 Glamorgan census!! Could this be a problem or are variable
ages not uncommon??
Any help in unravelling would be welcome!!

Hi Stan
Bit of a puzzler this.
I wouldn't particularly worry about the dob variation between 1771/73/75 , I
've seen/had much worse, although usually the more extreme[10 years variable
!] a bit earlier in the c19. People simply forgot the year, especially when
parents no longer around, and if they weren't particularly literate anyway. And
it depended who was giving the info to the enumerator, did they know for sure
or was it often an "educated guess".
Although some similarity in the words HADICOTE/ ENDICOTT I'm not sure that i
would go for a "sound change" as such. I suppose it depends how you pronounce
them. Come on you Cardiff subs out there, could these sound similar enough ?
With a bit of Devon thrown in ?
Yet the connecting factor of double given names/initials + Davies/Davey is
very tempting .
I'm not sure about the apparent Davey/Davies link though, the Daveys came from
Som, no reason for a transition to Davies was there ? No patronymics here !
I wonder, did Emma Hadicote remarry , to Henry Endicott, after the 1881
census, and dau Emily was the only one of the children young enough to change
her name as well, to Endicott. These things were fairly informal I think, for
instance there was no formal adoption procedure til well after 1900.
Also, was Mary J Davey another dau of Emma Hadicote? There were a lot of
people in that house, does that make them more likely to be family connected
?
Being a West Country resident myself, i wondered about that Devon/Somerset
link.
But Nether Stowey[edge of Quantock Hills] in SOM must be a good 20/25 miles
from the Devon border , I can't see a Frenston on my modern map. not indexed
anyway.
Overall , I am not convinced. Need more supporting evidence i think.
I assume there were no likely Endicotts on the 1881 census for Gla?
Have you also searched SOM,DEV and GLS for 1881 ?
Was there no Henry Endicott anywhere? If he was already dead by 1881 then that
blows the Emma remarrying theory.
Try for Emily's bapt in the Merthyr PRs c 1871 on the Lookup pages, may be
lucky, not sure whether all the Merthyr PRs are there though. Not non-conforms
anyway.
I would otherwise work my way through key people getting birth certs .
Start with Emily L Hadicote /Endicott,again, assuming not found on PRs of
course . It could be you'll only find one of them on St Caths, too late for
the IGI I think.
I won't necessarily prove the theory even when you have it but it will give
you a firmer plank to stand on ! Maybe.
Good luck
