I wonder if somebody can give me any advice on using the Commonwealth War
Graves website?
My husband's great-uncle, Harold Smith, was killed in 1918. All we know
about him comes from his niece Olwen, who was told about him by her elder
brother (now dead). He was in the army (regiment not known, but since he
came from Swansea, almost certainly a Welsh one). We know he was 22 when he
died, and the names of his parents, but that is all.
I have tried searching for "Harold Smith", giving both "1918" and
"First
World War" as dates, and was told that nothing matched my enquiry. I find it
hard to believe that, amongst all those casualties in that war, not even one
was called "Harold Smith"! Am I doing something wrong?
Also, I tried under "H Smith" 1918, and was told there were 200-odd matches,
but I could see only the first 100. A message also said that if I gave an
initial (which I had done) or a country (which I had done) I could refine the
search. Is there any way I can see the other entries? Or do I simply have
to telephone them and do it that way?
Happy St David's Day to all!
