Hello Carol
One possibility is that he was at sea. Although much of a shipwright's work was in
dry docks, I understand that some were carried on board to undertake running repairs.

Hi all , Got a marriage cert from Cardiff this morning for DANIEL
MADDEN
and LOUISA JANE JOHN , both are living at Leckwith Road ,Canton at the time
of their marriage on the 15th May 1879. In the 1881 census i cannot find
Louisa's father JAMES JOHN in Leckwith Road , or any other JAMES JOHN who was
a Shipwright in Cardiff . Any suggestions as to what to do next ?
