Hi Gwyn
No his title was not Lord lewis Merthyr. Lewis was his surname before he was enobled, but
it did not form part of his title - he was Lord Merthyr. However, one of his collieries
was the Lewis Merthyr at Trehafod (now the Rhondda Heritage Centre) so maybe (this is just
speculation on my part) people might have referred to him as "Lord Leiws
Merthyr".
The first Lord Merthyr, William Thomas LEWIS, was born in 1837, the eldest son of Thomas
William LEWIS of Abercanaid House, Merthyr Tydfil. He was created a Baronet in 1896, and
Lord Merthyr in 1911. As another lister has already said, the 4th Lord Merthyr
(T.O.Lewis) has disclaimed the title. This does not extinguish the barony; subsequent
heirs will automatically inherit it unless they also disclaim.
Regards
David
According to a distant relative of mine our ancestors were in some
way
related to Lord Merthyr.
Was his title actually Lord Lewis Merthyr?
My grgrandfather was William Lewis, who was living in Bruce Terrace,
Penrhiwfer, near Tonyrefail, in 1916, and Aberdare in 1871, and was,
according to the 1871 Census, born in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, c1831.
I don't know if the connection was on his side or his wife's, whose maiden
name I don't know. I only know she was born in Llanelly c1841.
I would be interested in any information anyone has on this Lord.
Gwyn Williams
