Folks, having had such a lot of problems with the Welsh PRs on FMP, I tried
several suggestions on the List, and then tried Howard's URL. Thank you so
much Howard for this, as this simply works, no bother at all.
Something I found odd. I put in a clear search for a marriage several times
at Cadoxton-j-Neath in FMP, in the Welsh collection for Welsh Banns, and it
returned 0 results
I tried FamilySearch and there was the marriage I needed, telling me that
the image was on FMP, so I clicked on the link and it took me to the image I
needed, straight away. Truly odd.
So, if you want the Welsh Collection, use
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/world-records/search-all-uk-records/spe
cial-collections/the-wales-collection and bookmark it!
Many thanks for me still subscribing to FMP Howard!
My best wishes, Jill

Hello Jan
It is now a few weeks since I received any communication from you and I wondered how you got on with having a hip replacement. I remember the elderly ladies of my acquaintance who had undergone the same procedure as you have suffered.
So I should be surprised if you are having any problems.
So please let me know how you are faring. (I think I have spelt the last word correctly)
Best wishes to Simon and, of course, you

Is anyone able to look at information on a death certificate? I am
looking for information about my gr gr grandfather, James Shea. He may
have died in Dowlais some time between 1865 and 75. He was born about
1840-2, so would have been 23- 33. If I don't find him on freebmd, does
that mean that he probably didn't die? (There is a James Shea who died
in 1882 at age 37 but I believe he is the one who owned the Bird in the
Hand and is not my gr gr grandfather - alas).
There is another possibility that he remarried a Mary Quirk, had a
family and moved to England. But there are problems with this fellow
being my gr gr grandfather ( he is too young, he gave his father's name
at marriage as Michael; mine was Bartholomew). They did both have the
same occupation, that of iron wheeler.
I have asked this before and I apologize.

I have a complete set of Glamorgan FHS magazines from March 1997 to December 2010 which I would like to see go to a good home. I also have all the Society of Genealogist magazines from March 2003 to December 2009. Similarly, I have The Greenwood Tree (Somerset & Dorset FHS) from 1994.
Do contact me if you would like any or all of these! (Hope springs eternal!)
Graham,
I think you will find that Bulk Glyn is in fact Bwlchgwyn, a village in
Wrexham county borough, Wales, on the A525 road, 5 miles west of the town of
Wrexham and 10 miles south-east of the town of Ruthin. Bwlchgwyn is part of
the community of Brymbo.
But do check

Again my gratefull thanks for all the lookups.
I would appreciate however a look for the Dorothy HARRIS who was born in Merthyr Tydfil District, which may cover
Aberdare for the 1911 census.
She would have been aged 4 then, according to the 1911 census indexes online.
I don't go for "Free Trials"I'm afraid,as that usually means giving them my Credit card details for a future subscription.
People on here know already,Ive been at this lark for nigh on 32 years, and have had my fingers burnt very badly by
On-line shysters who are only in it for the money.
I prefer to use the local library for free look-ups,but am at home with back trouble,so I don't get out much.
Once again,thank you all.
Kind regards,Graham.
LOL Dorothy Evelyn is the only one born in Merthyr, does that count?
Alfred William says born Black Dog Devon but in 1891 he gives
Woolfardisworthy, Devon, United Kingdom and there is (but was there
always) a Black Dog Inn in Woolfardisworthy?

My Thanks for the lookups.
I believe it was the second Dorothy HARRIS aged 5 in 1911.
As when she got hitched, she was just plain Dorothy,NOT Dorothy Evelyn HARRIS.
Further sighting's in earlier census returns for both families most welcomed.
It could be I may be in line for some free haircut's in the future?
Cheers Graham.

As always when dealing with a question about geography of historical
locations, start with GENUKI.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/CadoxtonJuxtaNeath/ describes the
sub-division of the sprawling parish of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath into 9
'hamlets' of which Dyffryn Clydach was one
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/CadoxtonJuxtaNeath/ParishMap.html
shows the boundaries of the hamlets, areas marked 11 to 19. Dyffryn Clydach
is number 12 on that map, and it included the ancient monastery site of
Neath Abbey, which in late 18th and 19th century was the base for an
ironworks of considerable renown and also a copper works.
In the parish register of baptisms for Cadoxton-juxta-Neath parish at
various dates the hamlets people lived in were shown by initials - D.C. for
Dyffryn Clydach. On the page for Margaret some of the other entries are for
'Abbey' so presumably she was born in the more rural part of Dyffryn Clydach
Bear in mind that areas of Coedffranc (Skewen area) and Blaenhonddan
(including Bryncoch and Cilfrew as well as the area around the Cadoxton
church itself) lay very close to Dyffryn Clydach, so people might migrate to
and fro, though that might be less likely for tenant farming families than
for industrial workers or agricultural labourers.
The fact that Moses gives his place of birth as Bryndewy locates it to a
dwelling listed in the Dyffryn Clydach hamlet of C-j-N parish in the 1851
census. The Census addresses facility in the Glamorgan FHS 1851 census
takes you straight to a reference and you can easily browse where adjacent
properties are. It comes after Glyn Clydach and The Cranes, and before
Tydraw Lodge and Tydraw. Glyn Clydach, occupied in 1851 by a banker's wife,
and Tydraw, occupied by a gentlewoman, seem to have been rather more
substantial properties. Google maps finds the Glyn Clydach Hotel on Longford
Road, Neath SA10 7AJ and Bryndewi,Longford, Neath has the same postcode and
www.old-maps.co.uk shows Bryn-Dewi colliery close to Glyn Clydach (but on
the west side of Longford Road) and Tydraw south of Glyn Clydach, down
nearer the Clydach river. Comparing Google maps with old-maps it is clear
that there is some sort of extended site at Bryndewi now, though whether it
is a farm, stables or commercial business I don't know. However Google turns
up that it was the registered address for Cuddy Civil Engineering Limited
from 2001 to 2003. The Cuddy group does a lot of demolition and site
clearance work around South-West Wales, and is now based in Llandarcy area.
As Dai Bevan mentions Bryndewi colliery on his site
http://home.clara.net/daibevan/dclydach/dcguide5.htm you may well get a
better response from Dai.
It may be worth contacting the branch of West Glamorgan Archives at Neath
Mechanics Institute, (Neath Antiquarian Society Archives)
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=43312 as they have a number of
estate records. I have heard that it is possible to the tenants in various
farms in the Neath valley over a number of generations, but at first site
the Dyffryn Estate records are not there.
Judging by
http://www.archiveswales.org.uk/anw/get_collection.php?coll_id=25251&inst...
it appears that the Main Colliery,Skewen Records held at West Glamorgan
Archives include material on Bryndewi colliery, and that land it was on came
from the Dyffryn Estate. There is a references in the Gwyn Estate papers at
West Glamorgan archives http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=29476
ref D/D Gw 349 when the property was sold in 1947.

I am a member of The OnePlace Studies and am putting together all the
information I can find for the towns/villages where my Sands ancestors lived
ie: Flemingston, St Mary Church, Llandough jnxt Cowbridge, and Ewenny so I
am likely to have many questions. I thought it best to have different
e-mails for different places.
I have some research done some time ago when I was writing my Thesis on this
family. There is an A3 sheets with no reference on it but the headings are:
Landowners; Occupiers; no: refereeing to the plan; name and description of
land and premises; state of cultivation; quantities in statute measure;
Amount of rent-Charged apportioned the several Lands and Payable to the "
Rector" added in handwriting.
John Sands has the heading " Herberts" and has nos: 29, 107,109,114, 115,
115a, 117-125, 127-130, etc amounting to a statute measure of 113,0,20 and a
rent-charge of 14-14-6 pounds. He is leasing from Talbot Christopher Rice
Mansell Esquire.
Some of his children are born at Herbert's Farm in 1839, 1842 and 1844.
As I can see both of these places on a map my question is is The Herbert's
and Herbert's Farm - one of the same place ?
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers from Valerie in sunny Sydney

I got the below from Ron some time ago (the parents and siblings of my
3Xggmother who married a James) and it is time to take another run at
it. First does anyone have a good idea about Dyffryn Clydach, I find
river Clydach and Dyffryn Wood which makes some sense to me <G>
3. Margaret HOPKIN would appear to be the daughter of Thomas HOPKIN,
and she was baptised at St.Catwg's 26 Nov 1774, born at Dyffryn
Clydach. There were numerous Thomas HOPKINs in the parish and probably
at least two who were baptising children there in the 1770's and
1780's - but at least four of the other entries with father's name
Thomas look to me like siblings of Margaret because they were also
born at Dyffryn Clydach (Elizabeth, bapt. 10 Feb 1770, Thomas, 6 Jun
1772, Anne 24 Apr 1779, and Moses, bapt. 9 Feb 1782). The fact that
Moses reappears as one of Edward and Margaret's children, seems to
reinforce the case for this being the right family.
I think I have the brother Moses in 1851 but I am not sure the answers
are "good" with the parish record. Any thoughts??
(Margaret died in 1847 so I have no idea how well their responses would match)

are "good" with the parish record. Any thoughts??
(Margaret died in 1847 so I have no idea how well their responses would match)

Hi
Could someone please tell me, when would regular obituaries have been poste
in the paper.
I know that in 1922 there were not many, but i am wondering if in 1966 there
were regular ones put in the paper before I go and look for them.
Thanks
Julie
Hi all.
This is for a pal of mine.....
I have Frederick CASEY married to Elizabeth,or Eliza MAYO at Pontypridd district in the march quarter of 1883.
I also have them in the 1891 census at Ystradyfodwg at 34 Penygraig road. with them and their 3 kids and 4 lodgers.
Could some kind soul please find them in 1901 and 1911.
Elizabeth, nee MAYO was supposed to have been born in Whitchurch about 1865,but I couldn't find her of the "Free BMD:"indexes.
Frederick CASEY is the son of John CASEY,
Who was born about 1824 in New Brunswick Canada.
Any Canadian's on here prepared to have a look for John CASEY please.
He later became a "British Subject".
His wife was Maria POINTING who came from Midsomer Norton,Somerset.
The daughter of Elijah POINTING,[1797-1871] and his wife Martha,nee DIX married 24 april 1817 at M.N;
I havent been able to find the birthplace of Martha DIX
Elijah POINTING was the son of John POINTING,[c.1777-1850] who was aged 73 in the 1841 census and his wife either Martha or Mary?
[there was a Mary POINTING aged 70 living with Elijah at M.N;]
Many thanks,Graham.

It looks as if this has come up previously. Here are the details for 1901:

I think we've been in contact in the past, Julie, about our Rees family in
Glais.

I wonder if someone would be able to do a look up for me.
I do not know the family surname but do have a christian name of one of the
children I think her full name is Hannah/Anna Mariah.
she lived in the Rock and Fountain pub in Craig Cefn Park in the Swansea
Valley and was born either very late 1800’s or early 1900’s
Thank You
Julie
