Thanks for everyone's comments.
Wikipedia of course came up with an answer - see see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_of_Wales_family_trees
I estimate that the Royal baby is 51st in direct line from the 5th
century Cunedda of Gwynedd - and of course as several of you said,
many thousands of others. The number is approximate as it's
difficult to count among so many interlinked trees, but then so is
the genealogy!
Anna
I did wonder myself last night whether they might use a Welsh name to
recognise their connection to Anglesey (was he conceived there?) as well
with William being a future Prince of Wales. They would have to find one
that was not difficult for non-Welsh speakers to say of course!
They might not go down that path but I would not be surprised if they chose
something unexpected.

Wasn't the Queen Mother a descendant of Prince Llewelyn? [not sure which
Llewelyn].
Princess Diana had some descent from the Gamages of Coity, who had in
ancient times intermarried with the Welsh.
But I'm no expert, hopefully others can be of more help. It would be nice

There are plenty to choose from Anna.
As each generation doubles up,we can pick some of the more ancient Welsh royalties on offer.
How about Rhodri MAWR,Hywel Da,and many others before them.
All of them related in one way or another to most people on this list.
Including me.
He's also descended via his grandmother the late Princess Diana to at least three lines back to King Charles II[R.1660-1685]
Via his umpteen Mistresses.[No Telly in those days!]
Last night I wrote a letter to the South Wales Echo on the subject.
Dunno if they will print it though?
Cheers Graham.
P.S;I recommend the Christian name's of "Charles,Phillip,Harry,Edward,George" for the new baby.
If it had been a girl,It would obviously been a "Diana"somewhere in its four/five Christian names.
What do others think?

Dear List
I suppose that the dearth of traffic on genealogical websites is due
to the seasonal weather and the excitement at the Royal birth.
The Guardian claims that William and Kate's son is the 41st in direct
line of descent from Egbert, King of Wessex, who ruled from 802 to
839. I wondered if any of our expert genealogists could give him a
more ancient forebear from a Welsh (or Scottish or Irish) royal line?

Althea
My thanks for all the explanations into That place, who's name now escapes me?
[senior moment!]
Anyway thanks to all.
I had a gander at the "Free Reg;"site, and found Michaelston-y-fedw had been done, and found a likely candidate of our
Charles CROSS.
This one was baptised 23 august 1785 there, the son of William and Ceicel CROSS.
I then searched for a Marriage of William and his wife, and found it in Rudry.
Thus:-
William CROSS,of Michealston -y-Fedw, married to Cicely HARRIS,otp; 8 may 1765.
The Christian name of "William" incidently, was the name of Charles & Susana's eldest male child.
I am now on the lookout for the Marriage of Charles CROSS to Susanna in Glamorgan or Monmouthshire pre 1837.
William, above, was born about 1837 in Llanedyrn. His mother Susanna was born about 1802 in Whitchurch.
Although I couldn't find their marriage on the pre 1837 Glamorganshire marriages on Microfiche.
Cheers Graham.

I think Cross Vane may be a bit of confusion on the part of the 1891
enumerator. Groes Faen (Stone Cross) is NW of Cardiff, in the parish
of Llantrisant.

Have a look at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/MichaelstoneYFedw/ .
Llanfedw is/was a sub-division of Michaelstone-y-fedw parish in
Monmouthshire, but Llanfedw was on the Cardiff side of the Rumney river,
including Ruperra Castle.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llanishen/ParishMap.html
shows that Llanfedw is/was NE of Llanedeyrn parish and Lisvane parish, E of
Rudry and S of Machen.
As in 1851 he was living near the Maenllwyd in Rudry he hadn't moved very
far
As for Whitecross, translating into Welsh suggests it might be Groeswen in
Eglwysilan parish, on the slopes of Mynydd Eglwysilan between Nantgarw and
Hendredenny. As his two younger siblings were born in Caerphilly that seems
possible. In 1891 it is written as Cross Vane and the younger sister is
shown &do Eglwysilan parish. In 1901 he says he was born in Eglwysilan and
in 1911 he says he was born in Bedwas, which was where his elder sister
Cinderella was born, according to 1881 census.
You can see Groes-wen in the area marked 81A on the map at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llanfabon/ParishMap.html

Greetings all.
I found a birth place for one of my cousin's ancestors as "Lanvedaw", in
Glamorgan.
Does anyone know where this place is please? From the 1851 census.
Obviously a misprint for somewhere perhaps.
As I am looking for the birthplace of a Charles CROSS who was born in the

He was in Rudry in the 1851 census.
Another place is "Whitecross" Glamorgan.
This is where a Joseph CROSS was born in about 1870.
This from the Mormon's 1881 census disc.

Hi Grahan
Sorry forgot about Whitecross. I struggled with this until I thought
of Groes Wen, west of Caerphilly, in the parish of Eglwys Ilan. (I
delivered the post there one Christmas long ago!)
All the best

Greetings all.

My gtgrandfather Solomon Rood and his wife Mary (nee Ham) moved from High Ham
Somerset to Pontypridd, Wales. Solomon is in the 1871 census in Greinton,
Somerset, England as a Lodger and he married Mary Ham 03 Jan 1873 in Wells,
Somerset. By the 1881 census they are now living in Llanfabon, Glamorgan,
Wales. In 1886 Solomon left is wife and moved to Australia. His girlfriend and
sons followed 6 months later, leaving Mary behind in Wales.
One of Solomon's brothers, Sampson (Samson)lived in High Ham until after his
marriage to Susan Sweet in 1888 then they are both shown in the 1901 census as
living in Roath, Glamorgan, Wales. They live there and have John, Minnie, John,
Daisy, Florence and Minnie. Florence is born in 1897 and from what I can find
marries Stephen Cardwell in 1917 and then remarries David Cornelius Williams in
1938. Florence and David have 2 children: Davinia 1931 and Frances 1936.
I would like to know if anyone can help me in finding out any information about
Davinia and Frances.

Glamorgan FHS will be represented at the SWAG (South West Area Group) Fair in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare If you have any Glamorgan queries come along and see if we can help. We will also have our publications as well as local and family history books for sale.
If you have ancestors from the South West of England, South Wales, etc, this is the place to come to as many family history societies will be in attendance. There are also representatives from FindMyPast and Ancestry as well as many other commercial companies.
You could always go for a swim or a walk on the pier as well!

Greetings to all.
That was a close shave!
I didn't need to splash out on a Marriage or Birth Certificate after.
So Saved myself some cash.
From further information from my Cousin's family,we are now certain that the family we are after
is the one that was in 28,Albany Street,Miskin,Mountain Ash Glam;for the 1911 census.
The head of the household being Isaac CROSS who was aged 31 in 1911 born at Ynyshir,Glam;
I then found him in 1881 aged 1 with his parents and siblings at 193 Dinas Concrete,Llantrisant,Glam;
His parents being Benjamin CROSS and Louisa,[nee WILLIAMS,married at Pontypridd district in 1869.]
Benjamin was born in Cardiff according to the 1881 census.
There was a Birth Registration for a possible candidate, in one who was born in the September Quarter of 1841
in Cardiff.
I then found on Family Search, one who was born at Eglwysilan in about 1841.
He wasn't in Cardiff however in the 1851,and I found him as a Servant,or "Carter"at Julians Farm Llanedyrn aged 18 in 1861.
Getting back to Isaac CROSS.
He married Mary BURT also spelt BIRT[on Free BMD;]in Cardiff September quarter of 1907.
She was born in Cardiff in about 1884.
So Lookups need for the CROSS's in the 1841,51 censuses.
Ditto for the BURT's
Louisa WILLIAMS above was born in Machen in about 1847.
In the index for the 1851 census there was one aged 4 in Machen,Monmouthshire.
Cheers Graham.

(my great-grandfather was born in Dowlais, son of an 'engine tender'.)
I have thanked both Jan and Wendy for the two 1911 census entries
of the CROSS families.
It seems my next step is the Register office.
Can someone please tell me[and others on here,I expect?]
How much is the Marriage Certificate these days,
and is the Register office in Cardiff still in the City Hall?
Many Thanks,

it may be a while. It is on the main road between Brecon and Llandeilo,
and stands alone as far as I recall.

Hi all.
Her father was Albert George CROSS born on the 12th;of July 1909.
We don't know where,But there are two of them registered in Pontypridd
in the September quarter of 1909.
Can somebody please look in the 1911 census for me?
Just to see if both of them survived or not?
If they did, then its a "Marriage Certificate" from Cardiff register office.
