Hello,
Here in the U.S. you can go to the county courthouse and look up the owner's history of a business or house. Can that be done in Wales?
My one ancestor is suppose to have operated The Buck Inn on Swansea Road in Pontlliw earlier in the 20th century. His name was William Williams. He first went to London and became a constable, then, he apparently ran the Inn after he retired or else he went to London to save the money to become a pub owner. Not sure as he has been so elusive to track. The last hard copy proof I had of him was the 1901 census where he was in London and a constable at the Scholefield Street Police Station. I was told by descendants of his older brother about being a policeman, the Inn, and also, that he was allegedly married to "Margaret" and had a son, Clifford. I haven't been able to find him in the 1911 census so I thought I may be able to find something on him via the pub's records. He is suppose to have lived in Pontarddulais.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all
In the 1891 census I find Ann Hughes and Mary Ann Evans living in Llangynider at 'Prince Llewelyn' - can anyone tell me
- what sort of dwelling this would be
- would it be near Dukestown, (Field Street to be precise)
Thank you
Gwen
James has some really good ideas. Have you tried googling? Are we talking
about Glamorgan or UK in general? I have books on it and may be able to
help. Council records are one of the best sources and also historical
societies..

What sort of date are we talking about?

Only just a thought to add to James excellent ideas.

Hello Mary,
The Ogre website which used to be found at www.cefnpennar.com - the link is broken some one may have the details to access this website. The Ogre was photographing Cathays Cemetery and parts were indexed including
D1 the Catholic section. If someone can help with the address of the website there are photo's of graves. The project was not completed, you may get lucky.
This is the blog of his website http://cathays-cemetary.blogspot.com.au/ which includes maps of the cemetery.
I do hope someone has a new link for you to view what is available.

I have been advised that she was buried in Cathay Cemetery with her

and I wondered if they were buried there too.
Will email Library of Cardiff next to find out how many are at rest
with her, my grandmother d.1903 and her mother,

Grandfather Thomas Hooley married again in 1915 to a lady called
Jelfs, but there was no mention of her
from my father and she was not the informant at his death,,,that beng
his daughter, Nellie (Ellen) Hooley Phillips.
I intend having a quiet Easter at home this weekend so hope to

anyway will let you know how I get on.
Have a Happy and Safe Easter, Jill...thanks for all your help and

Dear Irene
As you know (because we corresponded about it in May last year) the family
was living at 20 Club Street, Clydach, Ystradyfodwg, when their name was
listed as Morgan (singular).
Henry was recorded as being 44 at that time, suggesting a birth year of
1837, while his wife was a year older.
This tallies with the age difference recorded in 1871, but not with the
actual ages - both husband and wife appear as three years younger.
If we now extrapolate the 1881 age details - Henry Morgan (singular), YoB
1837 - back into the search we get the following in 1861, living in New Road
South, Cadoxton:
Henry Morgan 24
Jane Morgan 25
Margaret Morgan 5
Elizabeth Morgan 3
John Morgan 2
All are listed as being born in Cadoxton, apart from Henry, who is listed as
being born in Llanfihangel, Pembrokeshire, which could be the ancient
village of Llanfihangel Penbedw, four miles south of Cardigan.
Having said that I couldn't find any Henry Morgan born in Pembrokeshire in
1837 in the 1851 census
I did find Henry Morgan b. 1840 in Llanfihangel-ar-Arth, but that's just
over the border in Carmarthenshire!
Do you have any additional information which might help pinpoint which might
be correct (if either)
Robert
From: irene moores [mailto:irenemoores@btinternet.com]
a long time ago I was researching and I remember Cefn Crwbr for Henry
Morgan, but
since then I have mislaid the information, unfortunately.
I seem to remember that the wording was a little jumbled, and Cefn Crwbr
was what I made from it.
Not to worry, no doubt it will turn up, when least expected.
Thanks for trying to help.

Yes, I know - that's what I found myself in the 18711 census.

For the 1871 census I have:-
Henry Morgans 31 born Pembrokeshire
Jane .. 32 born Cadoxton
Margaret .. 14 .. ..
Eliza .. 12 .. ..
John .. 11 .. ..
Mary Ann .. 9 .. ..
Thomas .. 7 .. ..

Phoebe .. 3 .. .. (My Gt gramdma)
Jane .. 1 .. ..
From: Robert Treharne Jones <tjwizard(a)tiscali.co.uk>
I'm not sure I understand you, Irene
The 1871 transcription says 'Not Mon' but the actual image probably reads
'Not known'
'Llanycefn' in 1861 certainly looks like '..cefn'
Are you aware of any more information than what you originally provided?

Would this be the Henry Morgans living in Cadoxton, Neath in 1871?
The one where the transcriber has had difficulty listing the place of birth
(which I suspect is 'Not known')?
I can't find the family in 1861 but their daughter Margaret appears to be
living with her uncle (ie., Henry's brother Thomas) and his family at that
time in Llanycefn, Pembrokeshire.

Subject: [GLA] one more question
Hello Mary,
The name of the registers that you have been advised to look at are
the
Interment Registers or Notices of Interment. Wherever your ancestor
lived,
email the local library and ask if they can tell you who holds these.
Not
every Council keeps these, for instance the early ones could have been
damaged by flood for instance, as these were at Oxford many years ago.
These Notices of Interment apply to Cemeteries run by local Councils.
They
contain the Christian name & Surname of person to be buried, their
occupation, their address, their age and date of death, date & hour
when
Burial is to take place, Number of grave, whether Unconsecrated or
consecrated ground, whether purchased. You also get the Signature of
Informant and Witness, and this could be a son-in-law or son - usually
men
in Wales.
[The same applied for the funeral, within my lifetime, the women
stayed at
the house of deceased and the men attended the funeral.]
If there is anyone else in the grave then the Notice is usually
cross-referenced giving the number to access the Notice of a wife or
child.
By this means you can find out who else is buried in the grave and
when they
died, also if this funeral was from the same address or not. This
often
throws up additional addresses that the family lived at.
My best wishes,
Jill

Hello Dylis.
You don't say where you are looking for?
If it was Cardiff, then I'm afraid the local street directories end in 1937,then start up again in 1949.
This was due to World War 2.
There is one other string to the bow, this being the National Probate
<http://www.ancestry.com/>
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and
Administrations), 1858-1966at ancestry. There are around 20 possibles for
your man, but you really need to know the names of the children. I love it
because it has affirmed for me many post 1911 marriages, of course some of
mine were Henry Russel Saddler Lewis - easy to find!
But what I love best is the exact date of death, these are mostly cousins
so I am not keen on paying for 100+ certificates!
