Hi Listers,
The surname LEWTON-BRAIN in the Merthyr Tydfil area may link with Edwin
Lewton BRAIN whose wife and children, I believe, lived in Merthyr Tydfil
at the time of the 1871 census.
Edwin Lewton BRAIN was the brother of the Charles Lewton BRAIN above.
Edwin BRAIN, aged 9 weeks, son of Samuel and Ann, was baptized on 21st.
November 1819 at Oldland, Gloucestershire. Abode was Oldland Common and
father's occupation was cordwainer.
Edwin wasn't given the middle name of Lewton at his baptism, but he used
it in later life.
The marriage of Edwin Lewton BRAIN and Mary READY was registered in the
June quarter of 1853 in Brecknock.
Edwin Lewton BRAIN was 33 years old and his father's name on the marriage
certificate was Samuel Lewton BRAIN, shoemaker.
In the 1861 Brecknockshire census, 'Gloucestershire, Brittan' was given as
the birthplace of Edwin BRAIN who was a boot and shoemaker living in
Castle Street, Brecon.
The combination of the middle name Lewton and the surname BRAIN, both
Bitton surnames, plus the birthplace of 'Gloucestershire, Brittan'
indicated that Edwin Lewton BRAIN originally came from Bitton, GLS.
The death of Edwin Lewton BRAIN was registered in 1865 in Brecknock.

The Charles Lewton BRAIN being researched was born in 1821 in
Gloucestershire and died in 1868 in Glamorgan.
According to information about the BRAIN family, on the following site,
Charles LEWTON, aged 46, was buried on 23rd. July 1868 at Llangynwyd,
Glamorgan:
http://www.mosaicrpm.com/files/HUTCHINSON_Addendum_071205_Updated_100605.pdf
Note LEWTON was the surname at his burial not BRAIN.

If you want to know more about this BRAIN family put "Horse and
Groom""Maesteg""Brain" into Google.

The closest I could find was:
Births Mar 1891
Lewton-Brain Henry Charles Mitford 4b 274
Mitford is a registration district in Norfolk
No marriage under that name but this could be him:
Marriages Sep 1920
Brain Charles H L Pull Docking 4b 803
Pull Evelyn Brain Docking 4b 803
Docking is another registration district in Norfolk.
IF this is the family you are looking for, they had a son:
Births Dec 1923
Lewton Brain James Pull Epping 4a 777
Epping is a registration district in Essex.
There appears to have been only the one child.
If your man was employed by a brewery, then he could have been send by
them to the Horse and Groom in Glamorgan even though he was born in
England.

I take it the pub in question was in Glamorgan.
Hi Didi, Gareth and Listers,
Yes, the Horse and Groom was in Maesteg.
Eealier this year, I did some research on the BRAIN family who ran it.
Charles Lewton BRAIN, aged 6 weeks, son of Samuel and Ann, was baptized on
14th. October 1821 at
Oldland, GLS. Abode was Kingswood and father's occupation was cordwainer.
In the 1841 Glamorgan census Charles's father was recorded as Samuel LEWTON
and in the 1851 Glamorgan census he was recorded as Samuel LUTON. (The
surname BRAIN appears to not to have been used at this time.)
However, it was used when the death of Samuel Lewton BRAIN was registered
in the March quarter of 1858 at Bridgend.
Going by Samuel's age in the 1851 Glamorgan census and his age of 62 years
recorded at his burial in Llangynwyd near Maesteg, Glamorgan, here's a
likely match for the baptism of Samuel BRAIN. (Note the Lewton middle name
does not appear until later.)
Samuel BRAIN, son of Richard and Ann, was baptized on 6th. September 1795
at Hanham, GLS.
A likely marriage for Samuel's parents could be that of Richard BRAIN and
Ann BAGGARIDGE who were married, by banns, on 4th. February 1790 at
Siston, GLS. Richard was resident in the parish and Ann was of the parish.
Baptism and marriage information is from B & A FHS resources.

Hi List
Many thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion
and helped me to get a clear picture of Taff Street, Ponty.
Some of my confusion is explained by a recent email from
David Bolton (offlist), which says:
"The system we have in these parts is that all numbers start
at one end of the street and then continue back down the
street from the other side so, practically, the last number
is opposite the first number."
I've never come across this system before. I'm used to the
one where all even numbers are on one side of the street
and odd on the other. No wonder I've struggled with
Welsh censuses!
As a footnote I must mention that I have just come across
a really splendid map of the Rhondda-Cynon-Taff area
which is 'zoomable' down to the level where individual
property numbers can be seen. This is at:
http://www.rhondda-cynon-taf.gov.uk/en/leisurelibrariesculture/libraries/...
It can be expanded to fill the whole screen and seems to
cover the whole R-C-T area. There's no Save facility, but I
use a free utility called MWSnap to capture screens or
selected areas of screens. MWSnap is at
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

P.S. Ian, Thanks for your confirmation of the location of
Gwilym Evans.

Sandy,
It was illegal to employ women for work underground after 1842. Women
were employed after that time for surface work only e.g. picking coal,
or picking the slag from coal
