Hi Robert
Whilst the link on your mail refers to Nicholaston Hall, The photograph is clearly marked as Nicholston (sic) House. These are in fact two different places about half a mile apart as the crow flies - Nicholaston House which was at one time a hotel is at grid reference 251850 188593 and Nicholaston Hall is further west at 250967 188606. However, looking at the photograph, it looks more like Nicholaston Hall than Nicholaton House. I will send a map showing the relative locations off list.
Incidentally, I am sure that there has been a previous item on the list about Nicholaston Hall. Also there was a article some years ago about a son of Nicholaston Hall who became an Admiral in the Chilean Navy.

I still havent come across any pictures of Nicholaston Hall in the Parish of Nicholaston Gower.
G'Day from Down Under,
Following on from Robert Treharne JONES suggestion that "Gwwain yr Ewio"
might be "Gwaun-yr-Eirw".
I had a look at GFHS Glamorgan Census 1861 CD, found the following
4043 1861 Census of LLANTRISANT, CASTELLAU HAMLET.
Ref.R.G.9/4043,E.D.13.
Piece: 4043 Folio: 331 Schedule: 192
Address: GWAU-YR-EIRW.
There are 10 Household/Families listed under this name.
The RODERICK had moved on by the 1861 Census.
Hope this is of some help.

The South Wales Echo has a Service to copy Photo's from back issues of the Echo.
Just write to them with the date and they will let you know if they can copy them for you or not?
Some of these photos have a copywrite on them so they wont do it.
But ask and see what happens.
Do a google for the address to write to.

I still havent come across any pictures of Nicholaston Hall in the Parish of Nicholaston Gower.
I have also tagged in to several other Gower Families whilst looking in the "Golden Grove" selection of Glamorgan Pedigree's.***
One of them were The CRADOCK Family of Long Ash Ilston,Gower.
Another was the BOWEN Family of Courthouse.
Has anyone come across any pictures of these houses?
I tried googling,but couldn't see anything.
Mostly up popped losts of ashes, and lots of court houses.
*** If you Google these pedigrees.Make sure you click on the Wales listings.
As they have other pedigrees all over the place.
As you might end up with the KALASHNIKOV family of Vladivostok?

Hello Diane,
I wonder if this is Gomer's death on Free BMD? He is alive in the 1891

'Morning colleagues,
Can anyone help me with the name of the place of birth of Jenkin Roderick in 1856 in Llantrisant. The certificate appears to say "Gwain yr Ewio", but this probably is incorrect.
Of course, I'd be grateful for any further information on Jenkin. I suspect he is the Jenkin Roderick, Welsh, from Wales, who departed at Southampton, England on the ship Saint Paul, age 42, married, but alone on the ship, and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, 23 Dec. 1899, apparently headed for Kensington or N. Kensington Pennsylvania. Cannot find him in 1900 or 1910 censuses.
Welshmen often came to the U.S. alone, and if finding work was satisfactory, wrote to their families back home to follow across. They'd often first go to a place where other family or friends lived, or at least to a Welsh community.
Many thanks for your help and expertise.

Listers may be interested in the following extract from "History of
Pontypridd and Rhondda Valleys" by Owen "Morien" Morgan.
Morgan was a respected journalist at the Western Mail - cue reference to
another recent topic :) - but as a historian he appears as only second to
Iolo Morgannwg when it comes to reinvention.
Here he retells the legend (since dis-allowed by most, if not all,
historians) of the battle between Rhys ap Tewdwr, the King of Western South
Wales and Iestyn[Justin], the King of Glamorgan, who had 'invited' the
Normans to assist him to retain his throne at the expense of Rhys.
.....Rhys halted his army on Hirwaun Wrgan aforsaid. He thus had shot like
abolt into the heart of Glamorgan, while his foes were preparing apparently
to invade Western South Wales. Rhys seems to have immediately drawn up his
forces in order of battle, having the centre of his army where the Aberdar
Park has been recently constructed...........Late in the afternoon Lord
Goronwy[ed: Rhys' son] fell dead on the field....This tragic episode appears
to have paralysed Rhys' army, which broke into confusion, and a retreat
became inevitable.....
.........Circumstances about to develop, make it clear that the subsequent
movements of King Rhys were as follows. He did not accompany the retreating
army. He is next found at Treherbert......until about 1855, a shepherd's
stone hut. It stood within the yard of the colliery bearing the name of Lady
Margaret Stuart. Just below is Treherbert Railway station, and the field
upon which it stands and also Cwm "sei" Bren farmhouse has from unknown
times borne the name Cae Rhys ap Tewdwr [this field is marked as such on the
early large-scale OS map], and the shepherd's hut bore the name, Ty Rhys ap
Tewdwr......Bren was old Welsh for Brenhin or King........with his head
covered with his hankerchief, proceeded to the hut and slept in its solitude
that night. Early on the following morning, urged by the gnaws of hunger, he
proceeded to the farmhouse......The King's great age[ed: some 90 years],
misfortunes, nationality, and his Kimraeg, must have appealed strongly to
the sympathy of the farmer and his family. But it would have been high
treason against the King and Kingdom of Glamorgan to harbour an enemy to
both......What we know positevely is, that he was taken to the PenRhys
ridge, bewteen the Rhondda and Ferndale Valleys, about four miles lower
down, and was there beheaded, by the order of King Justin, in his own
presence and the Norman knights who had not joined in the pursuit of the
routed army.
.......King Rhys was "the father of many Kings to be"; his blood flows today
in the veins of Edward VII., who descends from the Tudors.[cough]
...The Norman knights present could not interfere, for Justin was supreme
that day....On that very spot, about thirty years later, Rhys's grandson,
the celebrated Earl Robert Fitzroy, Earl of Gloucester and Lord of
Glamorgan[since if the Normans had assisted Iestyn then they soon took over
his Kingdom], erected there a monastery and church, dedicated to God and the
Virgn Mary, to be offered up therein for the repose of his grandfather's
soul. But the people of Glamorgan would not refer to the sacred building
except by the name Pen Rhys, or Rhys's Head. On legal documents it is
refered to under the names St. Mary's and Home Penrhys.
[footnote: the accepted history is that Rhys ap Tewdwr actually died a few
years later than the above quoted episode while repelling the French outside
Brecon. I would love to believe the other version. It may be true, and Iolo
Morgannwg was not the first to tell it in his 'rewrite' of the ancient
manuscript, and all the best history brains have it wrong. Maybe]

Gareth,
Why did Wales go through two major reorganization of counties in 22 years?
Also, was there any reasons for increasing the number of counties. You
mention the creation of boroughs? What type of a governmental entity is a
borough today? My Edmunds originated in the old borough of Llantrisant in
Glamorganshire. My understanding is that this borough was eliminated many
years ago. Therefore, with the elimination of boroughs, why would new
boroughs be created.
In Pennsylvania, boroughs still exist. However, they basically are
considered as a classification less than a City. I believe they have village
status. Ohio only has local governmental entities defined as cities or
villages base upon size.
An explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Andrew, I was puzzled by your message. So I looked it up and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ystrad_Mynach tells us
Ystrad Mynach is a town in the County Borough of Caerphilly, previously
within the ancient traditional county of Glamorgan, Wales, and is 5 miles
north of Caerphilly town.
The date of this page is 2011.
I was unaware that it had moved as I once worked there and I was then in
Glamorgan.
As far as your family history is concerned you should be on the Glamorgan
Mailing List as your ancestors lived in the ancient county of Glamorgan.
Having said that, as the area is really on the border and families tend not
to worry about borders, I should also subscribe to the Monmouthshire List.
The Sirhowy River divides the counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackwood,_Caerphilly is a map, though there
will be many others.
Gellihaf, Maesycwmmer is within the Caerphilly County Borough.
My best wishes, Jill
