Hi
Please use a more informative subject line in your emails to the list, such
as 'Family of Thomas JONES of Swansea Blacksmith'
I expect you will already have checked out that Swansea St Mary Parish
baptisms 1813-1875 are on the IGI on Familysearch, batch number C022182
( from
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumb... )
This one presumably is not yours: John Jones
Wales Births and Baptisms, 1541-1907
birth: 23 Nov 1812
christening: 31 Jan 1813 SAINT MARY,?SWANSEA,?GLAMORGAN,?WALES
death: 11 Nov 1825
residence: 1812 Glam,? Wales
father's name: Thomas Jones
mother's name: Mary
Glamorgan Family History Society have indexed and published the baptisms at
Swansea St Mary's which are available via their web site www.glamfhs.org/
They will also appear in the Glamorgan Baptisms CD I think.
If you are a member of Glamorgan FHS you will be entitled to lookups in
their publications.
Facsimiles of the baptism registers of St Mary's and nearby parishes are on
open shelves at West Glamorgan Archives
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=406/
Depending what else you find out about your JONES family, it may prove that
the entries in the 'Cambrian' newspaper in 1805 about Thomas JONES, Engineer
at Penclawdd, are relevant.
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=5673 is the Cambrian Index
introduction. These are the items:
Cambrian D20 TRANSPORT, RAILWAYS 12 October 1805 ADVERT:THOMAS
JONES,ENGINEER,PENCLAWDD, FOR LAYING OUT RAIL OR TRAM ROADS.P1.
Cambrian D42 TRANSPORT, ROAD TRANSPORT, TRAMWAYS 02 November 1805 THOMAS
JONES,ENGINEER,PENCLAWDD NEAR SWANSEA OFFERS HIS SERVICES FOR LAYING OUT
TRAMROADS. P1.
Cambrian J12 MINING AND INDUSTRY, METAL PROCESSING, COPPER INDUSTRY 02
November 1805 ADVERT:THOMAS JONES,ENGINEER,PENCLAWDD-NEWLY INVENTED RAIL IN
USE,COPPER WORKS,PENCLAWDD.3
However, I am sure you are aware how common these names are in South Wales.
Jeff

Hi All,
Can anyone enlighten me as to what a "Colliery Wireman" might have been
around the 1920s. I have tried to find an answer on various websites, but
the nearest I got was some who made wire. Would this be a job in a
colliery?
Thanks, david w
I,ve not long been into family tree's, and not done much really, but i
did like reading all of the titbits of
Western Mail extracts and chuckle and smile and frown at the reports,
made me think of how hard the poeple of the time had, how perhaps lucky we
are.. will miss the reports. RIP .
Could some one tell me how you can look through the "Banns book " regarding a marriage in 1821 in Merthyr Tydfil.
I live in australia is it onlie.

I heard Lisa Jardine on the radio and I am so glad to be able to read her
words. Thank for the reference.
Jill Muir wrote "I wish I had been interested in Family history when my
parents and other aunts and uncles were living.".
So do I , though I managed to get some brief, but not always accurate, bits
of information from my and my husband's parents that have been crucial in
starting off each line and branch line. I just wish I had known then what I
know now about the way to go about family research!

Many thanks Dianne, Deric and John for your helpful comments on the above Vaughans. I have now found that the church of Llandilo Tal y Bont was under the patronage of John Edwards Vaughan in 1833. AsI am not familiar with the Church in Wales and the Anglican Church, I am unsure what patronage actually means. I should be grateful for enlightenment!

Found it fascinating when I read it the other day and thought how important
it is to get older relations to record their family memories at least
either electronically or on paper. Also to identify people in photographs.
Those were the two lessons I learnt. Thanks Brian!

Hi List,
I wonder if ayone has a record of a yeoman family named Vaughan in the parish of Llandeilo Tal y Bont near Pontardulais. The church there has been transferred to St Fagans Welsh folk Museum. Surprisingly I have found a marriage between William Vaughan yeoman of Llandilo Tal y Bont Glamorgan and Sarah Thomas of Little Newcastle Pembrokeshire, in March 1775 . Myself and some of my friends' families are descended from the Vaughans of Little Newcastle Pembs, and we are now wondering if the original Vaughans came from Llandilo Tal y Bont.
I should appreciate it very much if anyone has any evidence that the above Vaughans originated from Glamorgan.

Hello from New Zealand,
I am new to this list and I am hoping there is someone that can help me
The names I am looking for ....Disher and Tooke
Caroline Disher married Frederick Tooke, and although Caroline was born London I believe at some stage they moved to Glamorgan
Caroline's mother Ada Mary was my grandmother's sister so hoping there is something for me
Thanks
Eileen
Hullo there to one and all I have a Parish record from find my past which I believe is my GGgrandparents marriage
28th March 1821
John Davies ,parish Merthyr Tydfil
County Glamorgan
Notes :after banns( what does that mean)
Bride Elizabeth VAUGHAN
parish Merthyr Tydfil.
If I got the original would it have more on it.
I know John was still alive in 1853 as their daughter my GGgrandmother Hannah married that year (WILLIAM LEWIS)
Id like to see if there was any announcements in Newspapers of their deaths or Marriage is this possible to get also the death certificates but have no idea when they died ,the name VAUGHAN has carried on through the family
Thank you to anyone who can assist me.
Dianne
Dear Dianne,
Banns of Marriage were called as a norm. They were called three times each
for three consecutive weekly Sunday services, morning and evening, in the
bride and groom's church, prior to the date of the marriage. The vicar would
after reading the Banns, say to the congregation, 'This is the
first/second/third time of reading'.
If anyone had any known objections to why the marriage could not legally
proceed then [possibly] the minister would be informed and the marriage
prevented or delayed whilst being looked into.
Marriages by Licence were more expensive and was usually for the rich, or
because you wished to marry in a church outside of the bride or groom's
parish or in a case of a hurried marriage because of a pregnancy. It was
more bother to the couple as the groom [or one of them?] had to swear an
oath before an Archdeacon and that meant travelling to see him.
The Banns were entered into a separate book from the Parish register of
Marriages, and in some parishes still survives. It is often worth looking
through a Banns book, if you able to, to learn how this was written up and
to give more background information.
My best wishes, Jill

Hi Eileen
The only Caroline Disher in the 1901 census here in the UK is a Caroline A
Disher, aged 26 [DoB 1875] in Shepards bush working as a Domestic servant
in Hammersmith. She is working for William House, a Cutler
If you give us some idea of dates in the UK or when they married it would
help.
There are tooo many Fred Dishers, none in Welsh counties either

John
