I wanted to find William Hopkins Howells on the 1841 and 1851 census. He was b. in 1834 according to the data I have received so far, and didn't emigrate to US until 1865 according to same data.
On the marriage record that I received from 3 different listers (thank you), he was the son of John Howells. Wm. was married in Maesteg.
Wm. wife was Rebecca Phillips, b. 1839, and her father was, according to the marriage record, Owen Phillips.
I couldn't find either of these families on the 1841 and 1851 free cen. Does anyone know if the 1841 and 1851 are complete at free cen?
Many thanks,
Marc Archer

We have come across recruiters/sponsors for Cornish miners in various
parts of the world. We think that the mining captain at some distant
mine would he asked to find good reliable workers. He would naturally
try to recruit those he had worked with in the UK and whom he knew he
could trust with the work. This probably happened with other trades.

When my great uncle George Watson Davies emigrated to the USA in 1913 he
travelled on the Caronia ex Liverpool. He stated that he was travelling to San
Diego, California, sponsored by his cousin Robert Griffiths, Box 802, San Diego.
I have quite a lot of information about George's family in Bedlinog, Glamorgan
and I can't find a cousin of this name. I suppose he might have been a cousin of
his wife's who was born Elizabeth Ann Edwards, also of Bedlinog?
Might there have been "professional " sponsors for people travelling to the USA
or am I being too cynical?
I welcome any ideas because we're not a very large family!

Marc Archer and Listers,
Several names caught my attention and need to clarify any connection to my tree. The names are William Hopkins Howells b 1834 and Wm Morgan Davies b. 1865. Could the Wm Davies be related to Eliza (James) Davies? She was born in 1848 so this could have been mother or aunt to your Wm Davies. (I only know of one child, Charlotte, b in 1875 to Eliza and Wm Davies. For the Wm Howells: Could he be related to Charlotte (Howells) James? This Charlotte was born 1802, married Griffths James, 1825. Could your Wm Howells be nephew to my Charlotte (Howells) James?
It would be interesting to see if any connection...
Thanks,

BOXING.
Contests in aid of the local canteen fund were staged at the New Theatre, Port
Talbot, on Friday. The principal bout was between Griff GRIFFITHS (Ynysybwl) and
Will POWIS (Pontypridd). Half-way through the twelfth round the referee
disqualified POWIS for what he termed "dangerous hitting."
A ten-rounds bout between Billy SHEA (Aberavon) and Bert EVANS (Neath) ended in
favour of SHEA on points.
Young Freddy WELSH (Pontypridd) and Bill BEYNON (Taibach) provided a great
struggle in the chief event over ten rounds at Tonypandy Pavilion on Friday and
the referee's verdict was a draw at the close.
Strangely enough, the two six-round minor bouts ended in the second round, Idris
PUGH (Tonypandy) knocking out Young COOK (Trealaw) and Alf ROSE (Penygraig)
knocking out Young REES (Dinas).
Ray BRIDGE (Trealaw) defeated Trevor JENKINS (Llwnypia) in a six-round bout by a
narrow margin of points.
A boxing tournament was held at Abertridwr Workmen's-hall on
Friday in aid of the children's boot fund. Tommy REARDON (Mountain Ash) and
Sammy LEWIS (Ynysybwl) fought a ten-round draw. Kid WALSH (Merthyr) and Dan
O'CONNOR (Pontypridd) met in a scheduled ten-round contest, but WALSH retired in
the ninth session, one of his eyes being badly injured. Rocky SMITH (Abertridwr)
and Snowy REYNOLDS (Senghenydd) fought six hard, but not very scientific,
rounds, and ROWLANDS was declared the winner. Ambrose HARVEY (Abertridwyr)
defeated Young WILLS (Mountain Ash) on points over four rounds.

Hi Eliz, The Proramme's title was "Finding the fallen"
There was a dig around the trenches and this programme was based around the discovery of a wrist watch.
The story of John H. England is then researched .

Hello Marc
Mesley could be a corrupted form of Maesteg, the Maes is pronounced Mice.
Many Welsh people travelled to the US during the time you are searching. The may be an obituary on this side of the pond. I should be able to find some more information out for you.

Dear Listers,
This is a stab in the dark. I'm descended from Wm. Morgan Davies b. abt. 1865 in Wales. He arrived in USA on Sept. 17, 1881, was naturalized a citizen in 1886. His sponsor was William Hopkins Howells.
William Hopkins Howells was b. 1834 in Wales, was from Maesteg, Glamorgan, and came to America in 1865. He lived in several states helping to open steel mills. He ended up in Bridgeport, Belmont Co., Ohio by the 1881 census, and that is where his connection to Wm. Morgan Davies ended. Wm. Morgan Davies died early of La Grippe in 1893, and not much is known about him.
Wm. H. Howells sponsored other Welchmen from South Wales, so I believe my Wm. Morgan Davies is from S. Wales as well. I've wondered if they were related, but haven't been able to find a connection.
Does anyone on the list know of the other counties in Wales that would be of S. Wales? I may need the names for future searching.
Wm. H. Howells m. Rebecca Phillips in Mesley, Wales in 1861. Does anyone know where that might be? Rebecca was b. in 1839 in Pembrokeshire.
Any thoughts, leads, referrals, etc. greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Marc Archer

Hello David,
We have Glamorgan BASSETTs in our extended family tree - as a result of a
1C3R - David Morgan POWELL (1834-1915) - marrying a certain Barbara BASSETT
(b.1839 Llangan) in 1863. I have very little on Barbara's family (see:
http://www.clan-davies.org/phpGedView/family.php?famid=F175 ) so I should be
very interested to compare notes and to see how much more you may have
discovered about her ancestry.
Best regards
Ron

Hello List,My name is David Attride. I have spent years researching any
BASSETT in Glamorgan born before 1901. I now have a rather large database of
BASSETTs. I have also transcribed all 130 or so BASSETT Wills from 1551 to
1858. I am interested in making contact with anyone interested in the
genealogy of any Glamorgan BASSETT born prior to 1901. Am interested in
sharing data.David
