Hi list, having found my Welfoots on the 1901, and had it confirmed that
Violet Welfoot married Alfred Charles Vickery in 1916 in Cardiff, I now need to
find the VICKERY family on the 1901. They should include Alfred Charles
aged about 4 on the census. Please would SKS be able to send me the image?
Thanks again
Ann
Perhaps the dogs were dressed as part of a "pet show". These were held when
I was a child - we would take our pets to be judged as most unusual, best
dressed etc. often as part of a fete at school. Until now a part of
childhood I had totally forgotten.

children born Cardiff, the eldest born 1917, mother's maiden name Welfoot. I
cannot find a marriage for the parents, so would SKS please see if they can see
them in the marriage indexes? Mother's first name possiby Violet, father's
first name unknown at this stage
Many thanks again
Ann
Hi list, I have just come across the name WELFOOT as mother's maiden name
to 4 Vickery( surname) children, all born Cardiff between 1917 & 1922. I
cannot find a Vickery/Welfoot marriage, and was hoping that with the unusual
name of WELFOOT there wouldn't be too many on the 1901 census in the Cardiff
area.
There is a Violet Welfoot on free bmd born 1896 Cardiff, and I am hoping
that may be the mother of the Vickery children.
Please would SKS look on the 1901 for the family? The image would be much
appreciated if possible
Many thanks
Ann

==============
Dear Karen,
Your "Crofs Philip" is actually Cross Philip. The character that looks like
an ' f ' is a cursive form of the letter 'S', commonly used in 19th century
and earlier scripts.
In the Welsh language, Cross Philip is 'Croes Philip', and is the name of a
property, possibly a farm, marked on modern maps about one mile northwest of
St David's.
Croes Philip is at grid reference SM744264 on UK Ordnance Survey maps. You
can see the relevant section of a large-scale Ordnance Survey map at the
Get-A-Map website http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/frames.htm
In the search section near the top left of the Get-A-Map webpage, enter
SM744264 into the search field and click the GO button. You can obtain a 2
km x 2 km section of a 1:25,000 scale 'Explorer' map by clicking on the zoom
control buttons to the middle left of the map. The map clearly identifies
'Croes Phillip' by name in the centre of the image.
Kind regards,
John

Comparing the appearance of four people who appear in both pictures, the
Glee Club one was clearly earlier, probably several years. The style of
moustaches had also changed. In the earlier photo quite large moustaches,
possibly waxed at the end in Poirot style, seem to have been popular, but by
the second one they were much more modest.
If anyone recognises their ancestor and would like an attempt at a copy,
please let me know. They are too big to scan so it would have to be a
digital photo. The Photographs are due to be deposited in archives shortly.

Hello list,
I have a second question related to the birth certificate of my (supposed)
great-great grandmother Mary Parry. Her birthplace is stated as Crofs Philip
St. David Pembrokeshire on her birth certificate. I am having some
difficulty locating Crofs Philip. I don't even know if it is a town, a farm,
or some other type of location. Any ideas?

Hi all,
I thought I had my great-great grandmother all figured out till I ordered
her birth certificate. I have her death certificate listing her mother's
name as Anna Davis. But I have census records listing her mother's name as
Hannah. I thought that might be explained away because the names sound so
much alike. But I just received her birth certificate and her mother's name
is listed as Anne David. Should I assume these records are all for the same
person, or does anyone think I may have records for two different people
mixed up? I have been having a frustrating time with research on this branch
of the family as they have so many common names. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Karen

Natives of Swansea are often referred to as 'Swansea Jacks'. Many people believe that this stems from the famous dog of that name. However, the derivation is much older that the dog of the 1930s. Jacks were sailors. It was said that Swansea Jacks had a very good reputation as skilled and dependable mariners.
Unfortunately, a number of 19th century criminals from Swansea had aliases of Swansea Jack. (See the Cambrian Newspaper 1847-53.) These may have triggered a derogatory association with the name.

Thanks to Peter, Ray and Robert who have answered my call for help.
There is no time of birth on John's Birth Certificate but I will remember to look for that in future research.
John only lived until 1859 so neither survived very long.
Looks like I will have to get the Certificate for Louisa.
Thanks again
