In later census he says he was born Langhame (I don't know if this is
right spelling or error) but I am trying to find his parents and
wonder if these people are they <G> He and Naomi married in 1852 in
Merthyr where she was born and wed. Actually I wouldn't mind being
sure she was the daughter of Edward and Susanna

Dear Colleagues, I appreciated Gareth's link to the Cowbridge school
archives. Recently I have been looking for more information on
CHRISTAL ANN JONES, b. on Christmas Day, about 1910 I would guess,
who was at one time for about 25 years head mistress of the COWBRIDGE
HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS. After some browsing I find this school merged
with the Cowbridge Comprehensive School. But I couldn't find lists of
faculty.
My interest in her was sparked by our having a Roderick Reunion in
Llantrisant three years ago, and our passing through Cowbridge
several times. She was my grandfather Roderick's 2nd cousin, and
although I knew two of her sisters and her niece in Wales, I never
inquired about details of her life. I was told she graduated "from
Aberystwyth" with a degree in History. She never married. Now,
knowing Cowbridge a little, I'm curious about her life there.
Thank you for any leads.
Happy New Year.

Trying again to find the birth of Jane Ellis. Jane married mariner Morris John in Baglan in 1864 age 21. In various census she gives her place of birth as Canton , Bayswater and Greenwich. She gives her father's name as James Lewis deceased. Family story has that she remembered school days at Llangynwydd.
Another confusion is that on one of her daughter's birth certificate she has put her maiden name as Evans and on another she has written Ellis with Evans crossed out. In the 1881 Census there is a visitor staying with Jane named Elizabeth Evans . I hope the list doesn't mind me asking this question once again but maybe there is someone who has another clue.
Thanks ,Joan
Hi Jennie & List
Yes I have 1837 - 1847, 1860 - 1871 and 1871 - 1878 Merthyr Tydfil births
bought from you. I also have Dowlais marriages 1838 - 1900 & Ystradyfodwg
marriages 1837 - 1900.
I've been looking for the marriage March qtr 1868 Merthyr Tydfil of Robert
Hopkins & either Elizabeth Jones or Hannah Jones, do you have the record of
this please?
If it's Hannah Jones it may well be Rees's aunt her father was William
Jones.
The Benjamin Jones on the 1891 census with Rees is with a cousin William
Hopkins in 1901.
William Hopkins is the son of Robert Hopkins I found this on your 1860 -
1871 disc

Here are some reltives in Canton, Elizabeth Bond [mother-in-law] was the
widow of Charles Bond and they had earlier lived in Treforest and Llandaff
Road. Elizabeth Bond had also earlier been a dressmaker. The Hopkin family are
said to have kept a draper's shop in Cowbridge Road East at least until the
1930s, though i t may be they just worked there. I am wondering if any
Cantonians might remember where it was. They lived near Victoria Park and my late
sister remembered visiting
1891 - at 41 Market Road
William D. Hopkin, head, 36, carpenter, born Lancashire
Elizabeth Hopkin, wife, 39, dressmaker, born Treforest
Laura Hopkin, 4, daughter, scholar, born Cardiff
William E. Hopkin, 2, son, born Cardiff
?H. …E. Hopkin, ?1 month, born Cardiff
Elizabeth Bond, 61, widow, wife's mother, nurse, sick, born Bristol [my gt.
gt. grandmother]
Nellie Wells aged 10, adopted, scholar, and born Newport, Monmouthshire.
Son James Hopkin was a lodger aged 18 in the household of John Mathews,
railway carpenter, 34, [born Newport, Mon.] at 13 Earl Street, Stafford St. Mary,
Staffordshire and born c. 1863 in Cardiff.
1893
An Elizabeth Bond died aged 66 in the June quarter of 1893, Cardiff area.
This looks to be her. Vol. 11a, Page 219
I believe Laura was still alive in the 1960s.
Thanks if anyone has any info.,

Hi John,
Thanks for your interest, as yet I don't know if Rees was in Dowlais for his
1st marriage or in The Rhondda.
The fact that he has a 11year old "son" Benjamin Jones in 1891 census makes
me think that he might have married someone names Jones and that Benjamin
was a step-son. In 1880 when Benjamin would have been born, Rees would have
been 16 or 17 year old.
It does not help that I can't find him or his parents in 1881 census.
This had been bugging me for a while now, too many options to buy
certificates.

What do you mean by "Rees was given as a widower he was born 4 July 1864"
What was Ress Jones' fathers name?

Have now completed indexing the records for 1877 for mariners of all
nationalities who sailed on Swansea registered ships.
Index of the crew agreements held at the West Glamorgan Archives for voyages
ending 1862 to 1877, 1890 to 1894 have been completed
plus a few crew agreements for other years, other registers and trawlers
agreements.
The Index contains 57,180 entries of Mariners linked to 1596 ships and
trawlers on the Custom House Register at Swansea between 1824 and 1913
and 10,1906 entries relating to their voyages.
Included in the index are fishermen, mostly from England, Ireland and Wales
engaged Swansea and Milford trawlers from about 1884 to about 1904
Additionally 5,962 entries of the shipowners and shares held/transferred by
sale or probate. These owners are mainly from the UK and all walks of life,
some only owned a single share. e.g grocers, victuallers, painters,
ironmongers, etc.
Indexing of 1878 starts again in mid January. Further indexing of
trawlermen, shipowners and ships will also continue
Happy new year

Hi List,
My Great-grandfather Rees JONES married Rebecca James in Pontypridd R.O.

I would like to find his 1st wife.
1871 Census he was in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil. RG10; Piece: 5399; Folio: 144; Page: 8
1881 Census can't be found
1891 Census he was in Tylorstown, Rhondda, there is a "son" Benjamin born Dowlais aged 11 on this census, not sure if Rees's son or his 1st wife's. RG12; Piece: 4429; Folio 42; Page 29
Any help would be great.

Jennie,
Am I correct in viewing your CD page that your indexing of Cardiff
births from 1897 thru 1910 are incomplete? I am looking for ABRAHAMS
born in that period with mother's maiden names JACOBS and GITTLESON.
We have found quite a few on freeBMD, but can't be sure which are
ours. I am especially curious about Goldie ABRAHAMS, whose March qtr
1900 birth date matches but name does not fit in with what family has
told me or census showing a Bessie.
Thanks for any help

Hi,
I wonder whether anyone has a picture between 1890-1910 of Cowbridge Grammar
School. My father, who lived in Penarth and some cousins from various
areas attended there.
Does anyone know when it was founded and is it still there.
