Hi Ruth
Even for those of us who used to work for the ONS, navigating the website
was never an easy task! I think it suffers from trying to be all things to
all men. Also this material was put up in 2001, so some links may have
fallen by the wayside since then.
I couldn't find the file via the site search engine, but did get there from
the front page via Census/Census 2001 - census news/About the census/The
history behind censuses/Census Bi-centenery/History of the census/the
Registrars' General
There is some other interesting stuff en route

There was a Monmouth class armoured cruiser HMS Cumberland built about 1902
so probably served in World War I
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Cumberlandhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_class_cruiser
It has the battle honour Cameroons 1914 listed so it seems possible they
might have also been over the other side of the South Atlantic possibly.

Your message sent me scurrying to some old books---after consulting H W
Wilson's 'The Great War' (compiled during the period from weekly parts, and
probably not wholly reliable but packed with illustrations and references to
individual officers) I can't see any record of the an HMS Cumberland at the
Falklands (or the directly preceding battle off Coronel). The British ships
involved seem to have been Good Hope, Monmouth and Glasgow (Coronel) and the
Canopus, Invincible, Inflexible, Carnarvon, Glasgow, Kent, Cornwall, Bristol
and Macedonia (Falkland Islands). Can't see the Cumberland at the Dogger
Bank, either.
I can see a record of HMS Cumberland, and a photo (vol. 2, p. 301), with the
ship described as ' old British cruiser of the "County"
class (Captain Cyril Fuller), which assisted in the operations in the
Cameroons, and captured one quarter of the fleet of the Woermann Line' (a
shipping company operating between West Africa and Germany).
Perhaps your father was on other vessels at these other actions.

Many of the original parish registers for Glamorgan are transcribed. If
you haven't a fiche reader, don't worry - your local library will probably
let you use theirs! See the FHS Website:- http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsglfhs/
Purchase the 1841;1851;1861 census CDs & Llansamlet Parish Registers.

Hello Everyone,
It is my understanding that the Tablernacle Independent Chapel in Bridgend
was demolished and then turned around when rebuilt.
Another wonderful lister told me that the tombstones that were recorded for
the GFHS MI's are leaning along two walls of a little courtyard.
I will be leaving for Wales in the next few weeks, therefore not allowing
enough time to order the MI's from the GFHS. If anyone has the MI's for A-B
(Bridgend Tabernacle Independent) I would really appreciate a lookup for my
4X GGF, David WATKIN(S) died: 15 Feb 1859 or his wife Amelia (Amy) who
died: 05 Mar 1872. They lived in Old Castle, and David's burial is listed
in the GFHS Non-Conformist Register for Bridgend Tabernacle Chapel.
This is my first trip to Wales, and there are many things I want to check in
my family history, so I'm trying to determine if it's worth the trip to
Bridgend if there's no burial record there. I have both their death
certificates, but wanted to get the MI off the stone and a picture if
possible. If it's not there, then I am free to concentrate on other records
I need to check.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Sorry to inundate you with Rodericks, but as well as Allan and Irene
Roderick from Sydney Australia, we are also coming from Bar Harbor
Maine, USA. I'll be at the fair on Sunday, May 7, wearing a black cap
with gold lettering on the front saying "Malad City, ID" With Hilda
and me will be cousin Josephine May, whose mother Naomi Roderick was
another Llantrisant-descendant Roderick. Josephine is truly from
Malad, Idaho. Come up and say hello to us too. Yes, and there are
more. Tom Frizell from Wales will be there. We hope Colin and Audrey
Roderick from Penzance will be there.
Now, the news you've been waiting for: Yes, Phil, T.C.M., and Elaine
Roderick will be there!! But he doesn't need a cap to be recognized.
I believe he will sign autographs. Photos of Phil will be permitted at
only a modest charge.
Of course we all hope to meet and have good talks with anyone with
Roderick-Rhydderch family interest, and we thank all Glamorgan
colleagues who have helped us so much in the past.

P.S. The Roderick descendants are having a reunion in Llantrisant
Saturday, May 6.

I've got the Swansea centre map for 1878.
I can see a Goat St - runs north/south down from College St, past Temple
St, ending in Caer St
Not there as such these days although the other two streets named are.

Help please.
Can anyone tell me if there was a street in Swansea named Goat Street.
I'm told that a family member is believed to have been born there c1889. Perhaps it was destroyed
during the blitz but it's not on any A to Z that has come my way.
Regards Huw Lewis.
Hi again..I'm still on the search for info re: my Dad's days in the Royal Navy and in the battles of the Falklands and Dogger Bank. He was injured but I have no details. In fact, from the detailed descriptions at the sites Eric Head gave, I am beginning to wonder. Dad's navy papers say he served on the Cumberland but that light cruiser is not named. Anyway, how can I access his records? I live in the USA.

Hello List,
Is it at all possible if someone can do a look up for me please in the 1871 census, I have a Richard ( Snook ) Hayes born 1835 Midsummer Norton and his wife Sarah Hayes born 1844 Clutton/Midsummer Norton Somerset.
Their second son was born 1865/1866 Monmouthshire, so I am assuming that they might be there on the night of the census.
In the census before I have them in Somerset but the 1871 census I can not find them.
In 1881 they are living in Mountain Ash, Mid Glamorgan.
I will be very grateful for anything.
Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, Donal, this did NOT clarify the situation - rather, muddied
it, whereas Martin Briscoe had already made it clear that there was a Battle
of the Falkland Islands in World War 1, which was the period asked about.
============================================================================
BATTLE OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS, 1914
The Battle of the Falkland Islands was a naval engagement of the First World
War, fought between units of the Royal Navy and the Kaiserliche Marine on
8th December 1914. The British, reeling from the defeat at the Battle of
Coronel sent a large force to destroy the German cruiser squadron. The
result was a decisive victory for the British. [Wikipedia]
