Hi List,
I am trying to resolve a problem for a colleague who has been sent up the
wrong tree.
He has now been given the following details by a relative.
Father John JENKINS, mother Mary A. with children:
John b. 1885 Blaenaufestiniog
Elizabeth Catherine b. 1886 Blaenaufestiniog
Emily b. 1888 Blaenaufestiniog
Morris Daniel b 1890 Merthyr Tydfil
Thomas John b 1892 Merthyr Tydfil
Margaret b. 1894 Merthyr Tydfil
Blodwen b. 1896 Bedwelty
Mary Catherine b. 1898 Bedwelty
James Henry b. 1900 Bedwelty
Robert Arthur b. 1901 Bedwelty
I've tried Free Cen for Glam 1891 without success. I found some LDS
submitted records on the IGI showing an Emily in 1888 Festiniog and Morris A
1890 Merthyr. Their parents were recorded as John JENKINS b 1862 Llangollen
and Mary A b 1862 Festiniog, married 1887 Festiniog.
I'd be grateful if anyone could get a better fix in this family please,
particularly the parents.
Regards,
Peter

Hello,
I finally located my census CD (husband "cleaned house"--don't ask!) and I found:
DAVIES, Mary A. 13
DAVIES, Sarah 11
apparently living alone in "Union Bldg." Swansea in 1841. I tried to click on "View Neighbors" but nothing happened. Does anyone know anything about Union Bldg. and why these 2 girls would be alone there with no neighbors? Or is something wrong with the CD? I can View Neighbors with other names I try.
Does anyone know where Union Bldg. was/is?
I have another question, but I will make a separate post.
Thanks for any thoughts on these girls.

Hi Jeff.
Thanks for the information on James Owen and the web page for the hotel.
He must have carried a fair bit of influence. I think it's safe to say
the photographs
probably are more of the Owen family, sent as a keep sake, as most were
taken in Swansea. The ex housemaid lived in Cefn Cribwr, but I shall
keep on checking.
Thanks again.
Brian.
Emma -
What does that percentage really mean? If it's based on the Census return,
it simply means the number of people CLAIMING to be Welsh speakers.
I completed an intensive Cwrs Carlam lefel B at Aberystwyth in 1974, when I
was living and teaching in Pembrokeshire (my home county). I moved to
Monmouthshire in 1975, and haven't used Welsh since. I certainly don't
claim to be a Welsh speaker now, but I suspect that I know more of the
language than some politically-motivated claimants!

Hello fellow listers
Would there be some kind lister who would do a look-up for me as I do not have access to Ancestry to get it for my self.
The look-up would be as follows;
Mary Louisa Rees b. July 2, 1887 at Tonypandy, SW
If you should find her she may have siblings by the names of
Joe Rees
Arthur Reese
William (Will) Rees
David Rees
Nathan Rees
Lizzie Rees
Maggie Rees
Annie Rees
Mary Rees
If you are able to find her on the 1881 and 1891 census would you be so kind as to send me a copy off list.
Thankyou in advance

Hi List
Well done to the Ogre and team. What a mammoth task you have undertaken. I am
sure it will be a fabulous database in the end.
Just to let you know that L & J Research Services have indexed the deaths in
Cardiff from 1837-1897 from the Index Books held at Cardiff Registry Office.
It confirms just the names, book numbers and the book dates in which the
deaths were recorded.
It is a raw database but at least it is something to assist.
Have a look at our website if you are interested.

Evening all
Just another plug here for some more helpers for this project we are
attempting...
As of today we have photographed 5 sections of the graveyard, (leaving about
another 45 for the southern portion), which has generated roughly
2.6gigabytes of image data. These images of course need
transcribing... (hint
hint)...
Also, we may be able to use the records at the Cardiff Record Office if we
can get permission from Cardiff Council. I would like to get these onto a
database format as well so we can cross-refer to the image, transcription,
plot number etc. Not a small task by any stretch of the imagination. We also
need to double check the transcripts for errors before adding them to a
database.
So, are there any individuals out there who can take 100 images for
transcript? We are doing them in small batches to keep it manageable, and
100 images can be done in a couple of hours. All you need is Excel and
access to the web - the raw image data is all on-line.
Anyone who wants to take a look at how we are doing can visit the main
project page at http://www.genebooks.com/cathays - it's a very basic web
page with the details of what is going on. When I've got 10 minutes I'll
make it a bit more exciting and as soon as the database is up and running,
there will be a link to the query screens and the images as they will appear
in the on-line version.
Cheers

I don't see what relevance this topic has to genealogy. If someone wishes to
download, or not to download, a certain programme that may be of use to
them, is their own personal choice. I don't think we on the list wish to
know why or why not they make their decisions.

If you search the internet you will find that 72 Walter Road, Swansea, is
now the Beaumont Hotel.
From their web site
"M4, Jtn 42 head towards Swansea. Eventually you will pass Sainsburys on
your left, keep going straight towards the signs for the Mumbles. You will
pass Tesco on your right. At the end of Tesco turn right at the traffic
lights. Proceed to roundabout and turn left into St Helens Road. Take the
next available right turn and proceed to the end. At this junction turn left
into Walter Road - proceed up the hill, we are on the left situated opposite
St James' Church."
From the photo it appears that the hotel occupies both halves of a large
semi-detached house. In 1881 and 1891 in No. 71, the left-hand half lived
R.J.D.BURNIE, managing director of Swansea Wagon Works and MP for Swansea
1892-1895 - source 'Jubilee Swansea II.
Interestingly, this book refers to numbers 78/77 as having a tower in
imitation of the much more well known Mirador house, ' a style copied from
Queen Victoria's Osborne House on the Isle of Wight', mirador being a
Spanish word for lookout.
So maybe at some point there has been re-numbering, though I doubt it.
Next time I'm down that way (I went past on a bus this morning) I'll keep a
look-out for any tell-tale house names engraved into gateposts.
Maybe someone can check the 1891 census for James Owen born Pwllheli aged
about 52, to see whether he had moved by that date.

My gg/grandmother Louisa Fincher Goddard lived most of her life in
Gloucester, wife of William, boatman and coal merchant. William died at
Gloucester in1885 and his widow died in 1897 at 113 King's Road, Canton,
home of Mr J Boucher.
Louisa already had a daughter Eliza Workman living in Glamorgan, first in
King's Road Llandaff in 1881, then later in Barry where she took care of my
grandfather William Sumner Royle.
Looking for Louisa's death I found an entry for Cardiff district in 1897 and
applied to the GRO for the certificate. It was refused because apparantly I
gave the wrong supporting evidence. However, following my own advice
regarding the benefits of using local register offices, I telephoned Cardiff
and a very helpful assistant offered to look it up and ring me back.
She confirmed William was shown as coal merchant, and Louisa's age was
right. But she also said that the homeowner was J Boucher, and then I
remembered that during the second world war my grandmother had a lodger
always known as 'old Boucher'.
I have written to Cardiff Register Office for the certificate.
If there is a moral to the story then you decide!
Good hunting.
John Royle.
PS. If anyone else knows of the Boucher family I would be glad to hear from
them.

A Cook and a Housemaid. Descendants of the Housemaid has photo album
sent to her from the Cook in Feb 1882. (The housemaid had left to
marry). The address on the back is Miramor Villas, Swansea. Not knowing
the area I wondered if it was the same address.
Perhaps she had someone else write it for her and they spelt it wrong.
Open to suggestions.
Brian.
