Hiya Ruthie,
Welcome Back - but do take it easy there's a great gal. We don't want to go
missing you again for a while.
Thanks for looking at the 1881 census for John and positively sorting out
his family history for him! <grin>
I shall have to organise my 1881 discs out I don't know why they refuse to
load.
Best wishes,
Jill

Good morning Listers,
Before WW1 my great grandparents Charles & Ellen MORRIS lived at 27, Dock
Road, Penarth; Mum tells me that their house overlooked Penarth Docks.
During WW1 the road was renamed Paget Road; is there anyone who knows if
this road still exists and if it does, whether no. 27 is still standing?
Thanks,
Regards,
Ellie Thomas

DOCK ROAD.
When the original town plan was drawn up the road from the Royal Hotel
leading at that time down to the dock entrance was given the startlingly original
name of Dock Road.
By the time the houses were built in the 1870's and 80's, Dock Road was
divided into sections known as Paget Road, Paget Terrace and Dock Entrance Road.
Older Penarthians still refer to it by its old name, Dock Road.
PAGET ROAD.
Paget Road stretches from Queen's Road to Paget Terrace and until the time
of the Second World War it was part of Dock Road. It used to have beautiful
wrought iron balconies at first floor level running along the whole terrace, all
now sadly removed.

Hi John
In the absence of the census page images, we are obliged to rely on the
accuracy of the Ancestry transcription for 1881 - but this can be verified
against the LDS transcription, which helps.
In 1881, William EATON is living at 26 Gethin Street with his new wife,
Frances, and her two sons - his stepsons.

Hello again John
I'm sure that the main reason for your email was not to discuss the problems
of Ancestry's 1881 census, but rather to find out more about where your
great-grandfather was living in Merthyr Tydfil.
William EATON and his wife Frances were living at 26 Gethin Street in 1881 -
and were still there in 1891.
Gethin Street is in Abercanaid, Merthyr Tydfil.

You can also get an 1885 map of the area, centred on Gethin Street, at
OldMaps: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
The Co-ordinates are: 305850,203650
(Note: The Monmouthshire map is clearer than the Glamorgan map)
I have sent you a copy of this map off-list. It is a very large image but I
have reduced it in size and then highlighted Gethin Street in yellow.

There is some history of Gethin Street and the houses there at:

There are also some photos of Abercanaid at:

There are also photos of a house in Gethin Street (currently) for sale, at:

Hope this helps you locate the house where your great-grandfather lived.

Parishes definitely are shown - as will be seen from the following random
example:
Reference: SD/1852/46
Benjamin Evans, Farmer
Creation dates: 1852
Scope and Content
Will. Miscellaneous.
Diocese: St David's
Parish: Llan-gan
Township: Pantygollen
County: Carmarthenshire
You need to click on "Catalogue in Full" in the top half of the screen to
see the complete details relating to each testator included.
These items were included in the list of A2A updates for August/September
http://www.a2a.org.uk/about/catalogues/new0609.asp
Someone will no doubt point out that the diocese of Llandaff has been
misspelt (or at least spelt unconventionally) within the lists, but that
detail will presumably be corrected in due course.

Hello
No sorry - though I too had relatives there at some point. I think there is
a database on the net somewhere where you can type in the area and it will
give you the paper and then tell you where they are held - but I cant think
of it right now - perhaps someone else can. Sorry. (If it comes to me I will
let you know)

My husbands VISA card (I refuse to have one but he needs one for work) have blocked the use of Ancestry - something to do with stolen cards being triald on the site? (no connection to Ancestry) but luckily they do allow debit cards now, and so we used one of those.

I did ask the Librarian but they didnt know - so I think I'll need to try trial and error myself. (Unless one of them has worked it out by my next visit!)

Sorry Folks for my other input!!
When I changed computer and went to XP! I'm sure we all know the
problems after windows!! As I'm sure the list would know you have to
download extras etc. Well I went to Windows and downloaded the extras.
Before this I could never download Ellis Island manifest's. These you
would have to purchase. What ever's extra in Xp, I now have icons that
pop up. I can enlarge save to disc or print. I have no idea what this
this!! I have no idea where it came from!! right click on my track ball,
been so long since I had a mouse but I'm sure that some of you would
know what to do. It also works for Ancestry!!
I'm sure there is someone out there who is more computer savvy than I
and steer you in the right direction.
A bit off topic for the Glam list, but what ever I downloaded
"Hallelujah". I just Pray (sorry for the pun) I don't crash and never
find this little miracle for saving.

Dear List,
Reading Ancestry at our local library. Share all, only allows so many
images then after which I think is 10 or even less. A pop up tells you
to sign up!! I am a member of Ancestry and the best way to do it is to
purchase a memory thingy, which plugs in to a usb port and save the
image to it. If this is available in your library?? Unfortunately you
will not know until you get home! For the convenience 100% working from
home. Ancestry is out there to make money. Libraries can give you the
searches for free, I personally think that the libraries are not fully
equipt to allow saving or send by e-mail. Ancestry have it all sewn up!!
These are my own personal feelings and my own experiences
Jane (W.Auss)
I'm trying to trace my Great grandfather death and grave. I think he
may be buried around Trealaw Cemetery.
Name. David James Evans, born about 30 Dec 1850 in Georgetown,
Merthyr, In the 1901 census he was in 79 Penygraig Rd, Penygriag
aged49 and Calvinistic Methodist Minster,
He was also recorded being in Pentyrch! I know he was a live in 1906
He could be around the Willaimstown, Pentyrch or Tonyrefail as his
brother John James Evans was buried there in 1913.
Any help would be grateful as i been searching for him for 10 years !
Thanks Rob Vaughan

Thanks to Jill, Gill and Emma for responses to this: I'll now try the Cambrian index and the local Record Office. As to the local paper, Emma, would you know which it would be for Argoed (near Blackwood, Mon.)?

Hello John,
Congrats on finding yet another piece of valuable information. I looked on
ancestry for you and it appears although the speel tells you it is William
Eaton, Gethin Street, the link seems to pick up Penn Street, in Penyard.
There is a street index online, but how complete that is I don't know.
http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/Page_index.htm
Gethin Street is not shown.
If you still have problems, maybe enquiries at Merthyr Library would be your
next port of call.
Best wishes,
Jill

Subject: [GLA] 1881 Census Merthyr Tydfil Wrong Data
Hi all,
Just discovered / received a marriage certificate for my Great grandfather
who re married after his wife died.
William EATON born 1826 Reynoldston married Francis JONES born 1828
Carmarthenshire on 2nd May 1874 in Merthyr Tydfil Registry Office.
In 1881 Census [Ancestry] they lived in 26 Gethin Street.
The original image from ancestry is incorrect.
Can SKS tell me whether Gethin Street is in Upper or Lower Merthyr Tydfil
and what district RG11 / 5309 Folio 138 Page 29 is please.
Is there a list or map of streets and districts listed anywhere for Merthyr
Tydfil?
Thanks in anticipation
John

Help please.
I'm looking at the marriage certificate of my 2G grandparents. The groom's
residence at time of marriage appears to be "Glanwhalby", Glamorgan, although
it could be "Glamwhalby".
Does anyone know where this address was/is?
Thanks
Richard
