Hello
Thank you very much for this, I have now worked out who this chap is and I
know it must be him as I have now discovered that he died at Pleasant View,
Cheriton (see below). He married another Gower Thomas!! Anyway, he was
Abraham's Uncle William. I can't believe all these Thomas' and no-one is
looking up the same tree as me!!
Thanks again, another mystery solved!

Please does anyone know if one can get a birth certificate for a living
person if you are not that person and if s/he is an adult? Or does this come
under privacy rules?

Hi Tommy
Do you know the names of his parents? I took a look at 1851 and 61 and found
two possibles, both b. Dowlais. I thought that age is usually a bit more
certain when they are young - not so many years to keep track of!!
One is son of Daniel and Sarah and one (most helpfully) of Daniel and
Rachael but the two Daniels are different people as they have different
ages..
There is also one born to an Ann Rees but no father given.
I looked for Thomas Leyshon and surname Rees and Thomas surname Leyshon
Rees but no Leyshon turned up.

Hello
I am wondering if someone on this marvelous list could answer a question for
me. What type of information in general would I find from an obit in 1925
and another in the 1970's.
Are they specific and list family or just give general information?
Thank you

Hi all
I wonder if I could get some suggestions on how to get a birth certificate
for my wife's ggrandfather Thomas Leyshon Rees. From correspondence he
states his birth date to be June 1, 1846 (he could be lying - naturally).
The census returns I find him in 1871 and 1891 gives his birth as Dowlais,
Glamorganshire. He was not at home (in Milford Haven) for the 1901 census
and he would have been in Jamaica during the 1881 census. He also married in
Jamaica - is there a way of getting a marriage certificate? I have looked up
the Ancestry site for births and can find no Thomas Rees during 1846
registered in Merthyr Tydfil. Should I be expecting Merthyr Tydfil?

1st Question:
Currently have been using http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx to look for b,m,d's ( only to be asked for the name, date and date range) but have found it a bit laborious and longwinded looking through the various pages when I already know the locations that these events took place but not the actual dates , but have a fair idea of the period.
I seem to remember that I used a website in the past where you could enter the above but state the county and location -- can some one please advises.
2nd Question:
I am not on Broadband and wonder if anybody has any experience / comments to make on the use of ONSPEED?
best regards
Bill
Taken from the Collins Gem Dictionary of First Names.
EDITH
From the old English Eadgyth , meaning prosperous war. There were at least 2
English Saints of that name in the 10th century . The name survived the
Norman conquest and was probably adopted by the Normans and used to
transliterate several English names.
Edith was used throughout the middle ages, after which it became rather
rare, but it returned to favour in the 19th century and is still very
popular. The name is often shortened to Edie.
Regards
David.

GLAMORGAN-L(a)rootsweb.com . Please reply to james.mathews2(a)ntlworld.com as
well as the list.
Edith is a name on its own, occasionally in very old sources Editha. I
suspect it was much more common in the West Country (Somerset, Dorset,
Devon) than in Wales, so your family may have West Country origins, like
many people in industrial Glamorgan.

Hello List,
I need help figuring out where this family might have originated.
"Mary Lewis 25, Henry Lewis 1, Phoebe Lewis 5, Thomas Lewis 7, arrived at
the Port of Philadelphia, PA August 15, 1844 on the Ship Pocahontas. Port of
departure was Newport, Wales. Port of Origin Wales."
I am also looking for another Mary Lewis around the same age and Henry the
same age who may be cousins.
Perhaps the two Lewis fathers departed earlier?
Thank you for any help!

Hi Bob.Back in about 1985,I did a lot of "Reciprocal Research*** with a
fellow member of the Glamorgan FHS;who was the Late Mrs;Janet HEARLE of Park
Street,Bridgend.
Janet was descended from the "CLODE's of Cardiff".
I transcribed ALL of the CLODE's together with the BOND connection's to
this family too.
I do know that Janet passed on this information to the Glamorgan Family
History Society.They hold "Family Tree's"of it's members,who have donated
same to them.
I do NOT Know who is the current holder of all of these Tree's?But I'm
sure this list will tell you/us?They hold several branches of my Tree's.So I
know they have still got them.
There are Photographs of some members of the Cardiff "Shipping Butcher's
CLODE Family"in some of the "Cardiff Yesterday"Books.
I do remember seeing one such photograph of one of these CLODE's,whose
Christian name escapes me,Who was in a photograph, resplendant in his "Sunday
Best Suit",complete with his waistcoat,Albert & Chain.

Hi
I sent an email yesterday to all 110 members of the Glamorgan List who are
on AOL and whose addresses showed up in the list management page.
The current situation is described on http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ which
will be updated if Rootsweb staff are aware of any change.
You will see that on Saturday 20th Rootsweb applied to AOL for their new
server to be 'whitelisted' to prevent the AOL anti-sp am measures blocking
all mail.
You will also see that as of 27th, the problem was still in AOL's hands to
get it sorted.
If any AOL subscriber gets this message via the list(apart from Jenni to
whom it is going direct), please contact me direct off-list.
Otherwise may I suggest that this topic is not pursued on the list.

Hi Ken.Can you give me a date when your WORLOCK married the Elizabeth WHITE please?
As Ive got BItton Oldland connections too.
My g.g.g;grandmother Ann HURFORD,[nee BOONE]the wife of James HURFORD,"Farmer", had 7 acres, in that place in 1881.
Now the above Ann HURFORD had 2 illegitimate Children.
The eldest of these was Isabella BOONE,bapt;at Beercrocombe,Som;in 1822.
She was later the wife of James WHITE[1821-1901].And these are my g.g.grandparents.They lived at Bristol in Goodhind Street.
Any connections?

I have found a definition of a chapel of ease - a chapel subordinate to a
mother church for the ease of parishioners in prayers and preaching.
They were not intended for the Administration of the Sacraments, but many of
them rose to parochial status and were used as such.
They were set up where distance to the mother church made it very difficult
for parishioners to attend.
However, they often had a small cemetery.

Whenever I come across anything I don't quite understand on the 1851
Religious Census, say, I check to see what I have on it on my Help Page.
So when I saw a reference to chapels of ease being 'without cure of souls'
I attempted to upgrade my entry for chapels of ease/chapelries.
Having just done so, after scratching around google, I now wonder whether
I've made a complete 'horlicks' of it, so if any expert on Church of England
matters cares to tidy it up for me ..............

Hi
I sent an email about a week or so ago saying that I haven't been receiving
emails from a few mailing lists, I am still in the same situation. I contacted
AOL live, they queried my spam filter!! They also gave a lot of excuses why
I'm having problems.
It's not just Glamorgan, there are quite a few mailing lists, four that I
belong to. I will unsubscribe and subscribe again to see what happens.

Hi List,
I would like some advice please?
I have a Phillippa Hancock who married Ellis Jones in 1898 Neath. I have found a Phillippa Jones married to a Thomas E Jones on the 1901 cencus, Year of birth and place of birth match for phillippa but not her husband's and name.
Would they have been aloud to use a middle name rather than a christian name when getting married?
Thanks
