Hi all
Is there anyone out there who can find this man [John Marriott elkington b.
1852] after the 1881 census. Although he was born in Birmingham, the
other seven children on each side of him were born in Wales. The family was
essentially a Welsh family through the previous and ensuing generations.
He got a girl into trouble in Ipswich Suffolk and subsequently married her.
At six months after the marriage she gave birth to twins although one died.
He had another son but soon after his wife left him and by the 1881 census
they were living apart. His wife divorced him finally in 1886 [5 years
required then I think] and married again before the marriage was legal.
Decree Nisi October, Marriage at Christmas, Decree absoluteMarch 1887. Does
anyone know if this is legal marriage. Anyway the new husband committed suicide
by drowning in 1900 but cannot find a reason for this.
I have combed the censuses for 1891 and 1901 and can't find him. I have
been through endless passenger lists to see if he emigrated with no luck.
Perhaps he was a drunk like his father who died unknown and unloved in the
Workhouse/Hospital in South Shields in the North of England.
Please can anyone find him for me or make suggestions wherelse to look.
Best wishes

Hello Sandra
I happened to have Glamorgan 1861 census CD open and thought I would look
for your James Hill GEORGE.
This looks like it might be the family, but I can't understand why the wife
is (a) listed after all the children and (b) does not have her husband's
name. Were they married 1847 not 1874, or was the 1874 marriage the son? Or
is it just coincidence?

The only name anything like BRIGSTOCKE in 1861 census in Glamorgan .
Fforchaman is part of modern Aberdare, a few miles from Pontypridd but in
the Merthyr Tydfil, not Pontypridd, registration district in 1874.

Hi Lis
Cwmdu Colliery and St John's Colliery are known as the same but I believe that Cwmdu was originally a drift mine about 1/2 a mile further up the valley St John's was sunk about 1908 to replace the old Cwmdu drift and closed Christmas 1985 there is not a lot to see there now and is difficult to get to because of farmers gate's etc it's sad to see the mess up the now.
Dyffryn Rhondda Colliery is located in the Afan valley in the village of the same name about 3 mile's has the crow flies but about 6 miles by road from Maesteg all thats left of the pit is the old managers office which is now a DIY shop.
The other main Colliery's in the llynfi valley where Caerau , Coegnant , Maesteg Deep ,Oakwood,Garth and Cwmdu

be the same colliery? He worked for St Johns Colliery from May 1919 until

Many of the original parish registers for Glamorgan are transcribed. If you haven't a fiche reader, don't worry - your local library will probably let you use theirs! See the FHS Website:- http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsglfhs/
Purchase the 1841;1851;1861 census CDs & Llansamlet Parish Registers.
Also as fiche and booklets from the Glamorgan FHS

I know you've changed the wife's details but just wondered whether you have
this 1861 entry below - courtesy of the GLA FHS census Cd.
And if they all came from Carmarthen I wonder whether the Mary Hughes in
1861 on the second entry is of interest
Do you have them in 1881 ? - or had they emigrated ?
The 1881 entry John Ball quoted looks interesting but I saw on Freebmd the
marriage entry for JH George to Mary J in Swansea and she was not called
Hughes.
On Freebmd a James Thomas George birth was registered in the June 1876
quarter in
Pontypridd.

Hi All: I have Charlotte BRYANT b. 1883, Cardiff. She married Ernest SNOOK. Not sure if he came from Somerset or Wales. They moved to Canada and lived in Ontario. I don't know where they got married. I looked for them on the 1901 Canadian census and couldn't find them so I'm assuming they came to Canada after that time. Do you have these folks in your tree?

Hello again Glen.According to my copy of
"Kelly's"1972 Cardiff Directory, there are 3 firms classed as "Wholesale & Manufacturing Opticians"who were operating in Cardiff. These were J.R;Fleming of Bessemer Road,Grangetown,
Lessar Brothersof Mardy Street Grangetown,
and Michael Smith Optical Co;Ltd;16/22 Moira Terrace Adamsdown.
I don't know if any of these buisnesses are still in operation?
The addresses you quoted of Glamorgan Street, and possibly, Wheatley Road Ely, did'nt show your Rowlands living there in 1972.Neither is a David Francis Rowlands listed in this directory anywhere in Cardiff.

Hello to Listers
I have received a marriage cert. for a cousin of mine and am looking for someone in the area of Caerau with Ely to assist me. I would like to find this cousin as she is only one year older than myself. Her husband is one David Francis Rowlands. She is Alice Alderson. They married on 27 Dec 1958 she was living at 52 Glamorgan Street Canton Cardiff and David was at 71 Wh???ery Road Ely Cardiff. David's occupation is Manufacture Optician. David and Alice I know from newspaper death notices of her parents that there is two children Phillip and Jane. David at present will be about 67 years of age.
First can anyone identify the street that David lived at in 1958.
Next would there be any way of tracing David via an employment association.
Finally I hope tomorrow to have Alice's mother's death cert from 1975 which should give her address as she was an only child and I hope she was the informant on the death cert.
Any suggestions of finding Alice woud be appreciated.

Hi All
Must say I missed you all during the time I have been away.
Although I have an Ancestry.co.uk subscription, 1871 is not published yet
for Wales.
I am looking for two girls in 1871. They were possibly in Service as they
were not at home but they don't show up in England so they must have worked
locally. Or they may have been in a school and living elsewhere. Their
brothers went to Cowbridge Grammar School I think. Their mother and three
youngest brothers were living in Llanblethian abandoned by father.

Hi Glen
You have asked several questions and I am not able to answer all of them for you. I have no knowledge of any Employment Association for the Optical Manufacture Industry, but hopefully another Lister will be able to help you with that.
We are not able to answer any questions about living persons on this List so I have answered part of this in an off-List message to you.
What I have done for you is to check the 2003 Electoral Roll on the website: http://www.192.com/
This is a subscribed service, but I had a few credits left which enabled me to search for the following people:
▪ Alice ROWLANDS - all of UK
▪ David ROWLANDS - all of UK
▪ Phillip ROWLANDS - all of UK
▪ [surname] ALDERSON - in Cardiff only
The search results gave me the following:
▪ Alice ROWLANDS - 11 in UK, only 1 in Glamorgan (NOT Cardiff)
▪ David ROWLANDS - 200+ in UK, quite a few in Glamorgan
▪ Phillip ROWLANDS - 13 in UK, only 2 in Glamorgan (NOT Cardiff)
▪ [surname] ALDERSON - 3 in Cardiff
With some of the Glamorgan ones I have looked up the phone numbers also, but for those that I missed, you can look them up yourself on the BT website: http://www.bt.com/index.jsp
All of the details are in my off-List message to you.

Are you absolutely sure that the name of David's road ended in "ery"?
I've not been able to find any reference to such a road, but I have found one road in Ely, Cardiff, that begins with "Wh" and end in "y". This is WHEATLEY ROAD - which existed in 1958 (and a lot earlier).

Hi Listers,
This is my first request for help.
I have acquired a copy of the Marriage Certificate of my GGGrandmother and Father.
Thomas WALTERS married Kezia HUGHES in the Parish Church in the Parish of Merthyr Tydfil on August 26th 1854.
Thomas lived in Plymouth St. and Kezia lived in"Penydarran" (It is difficult to read)
They were married after Banns.by the Curate.
In 1854 was there only one Parish Church? If not how might I locate the correct one?
Does Plymouth St. still exist? Is Penydarran in Merthyr Tydfil? Could I locate it?
What is meant by"after Banns"?
It does mention they were married according the rites of the Established Church.
Any help would be appreciated.

I was wondering what I should do to be able to find a child born to James
Hill GEORGE and Ann Brigstocke GEORGE, married June 1874
in Pontypridd. This child should have been the first of 10 and may have had
the same name as the father. Do not know for sure. Any help would be much
appreciated.
