Hi Suzanne
The Llanelli you want is this one in CMN, it is very close to Swansea (in
GLA).
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llanelli/index.html
She presumably died in the Swansea RD catchment to be registered there.
There is no Sarah Turpin (of that age) on the GLA 1851 census, although
there is one aged 5 in Swansea, ask me if you want those details - that
family orginated from Plymouth in Devon.
Check out the CMN page of the Lookup Exchange, link below my name, for a
possible census lookup in CMN

Hello,
Still tracking the HUTCHINSON family!
I just realized that the 1861 census lists James HUTCHINSON as the
Beerhousekeeper/Carrier for the "Farmer's Arms" Cwmdu Hamlet, Llangynwyd.
So, has anyone heard of the Farmers Arms and/or know any of it's history?
Also, I have looked at Old Maps and I see Llangynwyd and don't see where
Cwmdu Hamlet is . any geographic assistance would also be appreciated!
Thanks much,
Diane :-)

Hello List,
Regarding the Genealogy Room at Merthyr Library it is open to those who wish
to use it for Family History, it was around the 23rd of January another list
member mentioned in his email about a competion regarding Donny's visit to
the Library, and there was calendars signed by Donny himself, I would like to
say that I have won one of those and would like to thank the person who
brought this to my attention.
I spoke to the lady in Merthyr ten minutes ago, and it was this person who
mentioned that they would like everyone to be aware that the room is there.
Regards Barbara
Hi Marlene
Do you have any other information that might help find them..... maybe
approximate ages in 1871, or names of any children?
Regards

Hi Evelyn
Six Bells is a small village near Abertillery, just north of Llanilleth,
in what is now called Blaenau Gwent.
It is chiefly known for the mining disaster in 1960 in which 45 men died.
You can see a picture of the village at :

Crickhowell was in Breconshire, also known as Brecknockshire.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/WLS/POWYS.html will take you to the
Powys list which covers the area.
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ is a web site specifically devoted to
Workhouses. There is a section on Crickhowell workhouse with map and
pictures. I think that if you look round that site you may well find answers
about what was normal practice.
As there is an entry for residents of the workhouse in 1881 you could if you
wanted trace one of them in 1881 on Familysearch and use 'previous
household' or 'next household' to try to trace addresses near Gelli cottage
in order to locate it on the old-maps web site.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Crucywel/ is the GENUKI page devoted to
Crickhowell.
I hope this gives some ideas.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks very much for the e.mail and the info re. the Cambrian Newspaper. I
have used this facility in the past and am waiting patiently for the on line
version, to save me travelling from Aberdare. But its time, I suppose, to
put my newly acquired bus pass to some good use :-)
I must admit I missed the entry re. your entertaining tale about the Buck
Inn, Pontlliw. I will certainly look it up and incude it in the book.
Thanks once again Jeff,
Kind regards
Deric.

In the 'Cambrian' newspaper dated 2nd July 1875 which I was looking at last
week there was a court case involving a pub called the 'Buck' in
Pontardulais.
From memory a woman accused the landlord of assaulting her. She had come to
the pub and accused the landlord of having got her husband drunk yet again.
The landlord 'asked' her to leave and while pushing her out of the door she
grabbed hold of him. He then shut the door on her arm. A defence witness was
a customer who was also accused by the woman - a Mrs HOPKINS I think - of
having made her husband drunk and claimed that getting her arm caught in the
door was her own fault.
I think the case was dismissed.
The 'Cambrian' is on microfilm at Swansea central library. The index can be
accessed by appointment with staff and a search on 'Pontardulais' in the
categories on pub premises and on drinking offences, vandalism and
vagrancy might well give you some historical colour.
The Cambrian index should be back onlinein due course at

Hello List,
I recently received a birth certificate on Susanna Jones, b. March 29, 1862 Pan Ty, Michaelston-Super-Avon, Glamorgan, Wales. Mother was Jane Jones formerly Lewis. Jane LEWIS is the daughter of Rees LEWIS & Susannah JONES b. August 11, 1788. Susannah JONES b. b. August 11, 1788 is the daughter of Evan John DAVID (Evan JONES) & Susannah.
I believe Evan Jones who married Jane LEWIS is the s/o David Jones, b. c 1771 Baglan, Farmer, however I am not positive on this. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate as of yet.

Hi Robert
I have ancestors who were living in Hewell Street in 1891 and in 1901 named
SHAW and BROCKWAY. In both 1891 and 1901 the census lists Hewell Street as
being in Canton. Today, Hewell Street has modern housing and is in
Grangetown.
