Hello Listers,
I have recently located a 2nd cousin who has loaned me some of the memorabilia in his possession so I can copy what I would like, and one of the items is a booklet entitled A History - Welsh Congregational Church - Martins Ferry, Ohio 1874-1924. In this booklet are some brief bios and pictures of a few of the Welsh ministers who at one time or another were associated with this church. Additionally, there are some surnames of Welsh families who were also associated with the church.
I thought that there may be some descendants still in Wales who would recognize some of these folks. At Jill's suggestion, I'll post parts of some of the info using separate emails, so I don't clog the system. If you recognize any of these folks, feel free to email me off list & I'll let you know if there's anymore printed up about them in this booklet. So here goes:
Rev. John P. Thomas "was born on a farm called 'Carnhaedria' in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, July 28, 1818. His mother died when he was five years old, and he was brought up by his grandparents." At the age of 18 he went to Swansea "to learn the carpenter's trade and to improve himself in an educational way."
John P. Thomas married Elizabeth Richards in 1850 and their children included 2 sons and 3 daughters, but only those living at the time this booklet was printed are listed and they were, Mrs. David L. Thomas, Irondale; Mrs. Thomas R. Lloyd and Mrs. James Eberlein, both of Cambridge. Mr. & Mrs. Thomas and their eldest daughter came to America in 1852 and initially settled in Pittsburgh, and it was after coming to America that a "Rev. John Morgan Thomas, pastor of the Welsh Congregational Church of Pittsburgh" and some other folks encouraged John P. Thomas to go into the ministry. He eventually (in 1875) became the first regular pastor of the Welsh Church in Aetnaville, Ohio.
For those unfamiliar with the area, Aetnaville and Bridgeport and Martins Ferry, Ohio are communities along the Ohio River that run one into another. The information in this booklet is that at first the Welsh residents of Aetnaville held services in their homes and a Minister from Wheeling, WV (across the Ohio River from Aetnaville) would come to preach in Welsh on occasion. Later on, but before the Church was built, services were held in the Aetnaville schoolhouse. In 1883, dedication services were held for the new Aetnaville Church. As the population of the area increased and new places of employment were developing north along the Ohio River in Martins Ferry, folks also moved to follow the mills, factories, etc. It was decided that a new Church would need to be built in Martins Ferry, Ohio to meet the needs of the growing community. In June, 1909, the first service was held in the new Welsh Congregational Church in Martins Ferry, Ohio.
.
There is additional info as to the various places Rev. Thomas lived and served as a Minister. He died December 11, 1902 - the place of death is not recorded.

Hi all,
In an extract from the 1891 census, my g-grandfather is living with a family of whom I have not heard before ...... is anyone researching a Thomas & Sarah Francis, children Catherine ca 1880, Gwendoline ca 1881, Thomas ca 1883 and Walter ca 1884. My grand is shown as a nephew, but I have found no connection (so far) between Stockwood & Francis.

I am a beginning researcher. I am interested in obtaining copies of Gertrude
JEREMIAH's birth and or death certificates. She was born circa 1891 and she
died in 1972. Can you offer me some advice on how to proceed? Thanks so
much.
Also, are there any Banbury's on this mailing list? Just curious.

Hi Anne ,
Thank you for sending us the PRO's message. That at least makes it much
clearer and let's hope that we shall soon be able to view the PRO 1891
census as easily as 1901 - whoops - sorry - to view the PRO 1891 census as
easily as you are now able to view the 1901. That's better.
Cheers,
Jill

Everyone,
If you know of members of this list who have bounced BT or hotmail accounts
and you can contact them other than email - perhaps you will let them know
of the problems these ISPs are causing at present. Many with these ISPs are
being bounced off the Glamorgan List because of problems between the ISPs
and Rootsweb. Many of you subscribed at present are using BT, and a few are
still with hotmail, so please bear this information in mind if you do happen
to be bounced off the list and re-subscribe. The Rootsweb server does this
automatically after three bounced messages.

Hi Margaret, further to Jo Annes reply, if you go to multimap.com and
enter, Porth, Tonypandy or Penygraig, with a little navigation you
should find Dinas. Concrete houses as they were called was an early
version of the present day prefabricated blocks of flats. They have now
been demolished and replaced with a more modern living area and Dinas
buildings in general has been also been demolished and the river Taff
which runs through it cleaned up of all the coal mine waste and now has
fish, trout, able to live in it again. Many trees have also been planted
and this part of the valley called Rhondda Fawr is probably back to what
it looked like before the start of the coal mining era. Hope this is of
interest to you. I left there in 1965 but still have relatives living in
the area. Please let me know if I can help further. Regards to all. Leon

I contacted the PRO yesterday
(between Jill's 2 e-mails on the subject)
wondering whether they still hoped to put
1891 & 1881 etc online -
as is still suggested on their website.
I've received a reply already! (See below.)
It doesn't actually answer my question;
but at least it shows the Ancestry licence
is definitely NON-exclusive.
I suppose it's similar to the licence granted
to Archive CD Books http://www.archivecdbooks.org
to sell CDs of scans of many (mainly 1861) Censuses
(eg Glamorgan 'soon', & Caernarvonshire, Pembrokeshire,
& Carmarthenshire, even sooner and already pre-orderable);
and the licence granted to Carmarthenshire FHS
http://www.carmarthenshirefhs.btinternet.co.uk/
to sell scans of Carms Censuses 1901, 1851, & 1841 (so far)
(each set of which currently comes with a FREE CD of scans
covering c35% of the population of Carmarthenshire 1861!).
(It may be of interest that I bought Carms 1851 & 1841,
and have found both quick and easy to use,
and extremely useful for building up extended families -
especially as 1851 includes Name Indexes of some areas.)
(And no, I have no commercial connection with either
of these organisations other than as a satisfied customer.)
(Perhaps I should add that there are also
commercial companies producing CDs of scans
of various Censuses of various areas.
I was just mentioning current or imminent
PRO-licensed projects re Glamorgan & environs.)

Margaret -
You might want to search the WALES-GEN archives at the following address.
Nancy Cook of Pasadena, MD is going through the entire history of the
Wilkes-Barre Record and posting any items that reference Wales, particularly
obituaries. I just found the name of my great-grandfather (Edward A. MORGAN
of Mountain Ash) and a number of relations this way.

Thank you Ron Davies for posting your answer to the list. I live in Canada and had a relative emigrate from Eastern Canada to Western Canada to homestead. I wasn't aware of this resource and found him also.
Amazing the information on this list!

Hi Judy
Like you I joined Ancestry and luckily I opt to pay every quater so after
finding out that they had nothing on Southern Ireland of interest to me, I
thought what a waste of money, I tried to unsubscribe online, but there was
no way it could be done, I did eventually find a phone number in amongst
everything and I phoned to cancel It, it didn't cost a lot and they did say I
could keep searching for the time I had paid for, very kind of them :-) hope
you soon get out of your predicament. They cater more for America.

Hi Namesake!
Thanks very much for that Ron - I have just accessed the site, following
your extremely helpful instructions, and found 14 possible William Davies
entries, so will order up photocopies and hopefully find that one of them is
my grandfather. Will let you know how I get on.
Many thanks again - and my thanks also to Ann Bishop for pointing me in the
same direction, and to Roland Purnell for his input on the same topic.
Best regards,
Ron
